ROLL CALL – Marc LaFerrier, Director of Community Development opened the meeting with roll call as follows: Batia Dayan Absent Patricia Hague Present Antonio Lamar Williams Present Ann Page Present Lucye W. Penn Present Bettie H. Ellis Present Crady Baker Present City Commissioner Chickie Brandimarte - In attendance City Commissioner Albert Jones - In attendance II. DISCUSSION Mr. LaFerrier explained the purpose and procedures of the Board. He suggested Board members introduce themselves and provide some background in their educational interest or experience. He mentioned that there is a Grant Writing seminar sponsored by the Grant Advisory Board here at City Hall on June 8th at 9:30 – 12 pm. The seminar will discuss non-profit 501 3c organizations. III. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE BOARD Director LaFerrier defined the typical agenda for the community boards to include: the Agenda, Approval of Minutes, New Business and Old Business. The Educational Advisory Board will meet the first Tuesday of the month at 6:30 pm. The Board agreed that there will not be a meeting in July due to the 4th of July. Mr. LaFerrier also suggested that each Board member may wish to assign certain topics for research and monitoring such as legislation, budgets and activities involving education in Dania Beach (i.e. School Board agendas and State Legislation). IV.ELECTION OF OFFICERS – Will wait until the August 2013 meeting Educational Advisory Board June 4, 2013 Page 2 of 2 V. NEW BUSINESS Board members discussed a resolution passed by the City of Hollywood regarding “high- stakes” standardized testing. Board members also requested that the group that gave the presentation to the City of Hollywood appear before the Board. In addition, it was advised that Collins Elementary is losing the “Headstart” program and that it is moving to Peter’s Elementary in Plantation. The Board will also look into how this decision by the School Board was made and if it can be reversed. The Board members also discussed various education projects and programs the Board could be involved, as well as collaboration with community and governmental groups. VI.
