CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chairman Rogers at 7:35 PM MEMBERS PRESENT: MEMBERS ABSENT: Larry Rogers Todd Neal Vince Marlin Commissioner Pat Flury Lottye Crooms Joseph Spongross Carolyn Jones Wardell Lee Roger Handevidt ALSO PRESENT: Attorney Ken Harrison – Sugarman & Susskind, PA II. POLICE APPOINTMENTS Thirteen ballots that were received in the Board of Trustees office were opened and the following two police officers were voted to the Board unanimously: LARRY ROGERS VINCE MARLIN MOTION by Roger Handevidt to accept the results of the police officers ballots SECOND: Carolyn Jones PASSED UNANIMOUSLY III. FIRE APPOINTMENTS This item is pending. A ballot was emailed to all active fire fighters in the plan. and only 4 responded. MOTION by Carolyn Jones to accept the results of the fire fighter ballots SECOND: Wardell Lee PASSED UNANIMOUSLY April 20, 2011 Page 2 of 4 IV. COMMISSION APPOINTMENTS The Dania Beach City Commission, at their regular meeting held on April 12, 2011 appointed the following Commissioner to serve on the Police and Fire Pension Board for the 2011 – 2015 term: COMMISSIONER PAT FLURY The Dania Beach City Commission, at their regular meeting held on April 14, 2009 appointed the following three residents to serve on the Police and Fire Pension Board for the 2009 – 2011 term: LOTTYE CROOMS WARDELL LEE ROGER HANDEVIDT MOTION by Roger Handevidt to seat all of the elected and re-appointed trustees. SECOND: Ted Spongross PASSED UNANIMOUSLY V. ELECTION OF NINTH MEMBER In compliance with Section 18-46(1)(d) of the City of Dania Beach Code of Ordinances, nominations were accepted for the ninth member of the Board MOTION by Ted Spongross to nominate Carolyn Jones as ninth member of the Board SECOND: Wardell Lee PASSED UNANIMOUSLY VI. ELECTION OF OFFICERS In compliance with Section 18-45(3) of the City of Dania Beach Code of Ordinances, nominations were accepted for the positions of three principal officers of the Board of Trustees. April 20, 2011 Page 3 of 4 (A) CHAIRMAN Trustee Spongross nominated Larry Rogers as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Nomination was accepted. No other nominations were voiced. LARRY ROGERS is ELECTED AS CHAIRMAN BY ACCLIMATION (B) VICE CHAIRMAN & SECRETARY Ted Spongross was nominated as Vice Chairman and Vince Marlin was nominated as Secretary of the Board of Trustees. Nominations were accepted. No other nominations were voiced. MOTION: by Carolyn Jones to keep Vice Chairman and Secretary the same. SECOND: Roger Handevidt PASSED UNAMINIOUSLY ALL TRUSTEES IN ATTENDANCE THEN TOOK AN OATH OF OFFICE VII. APPROVAL OF MINUTES MOTION by Ted Spongross to accept minutes from the February 16, 2011 meeting as submitted SECOND: Carolyn Jones PASSED UNANIMOUSLY VIII. CONSENT AGENDA No Items were listed on Consent Agenda IX. OLD BUSINESS X. NEW BUSINESS 10.1 DANIA FIRE/BSO MERGER COSTS Actuary and Attorney Fees Discussion took place regarding actuary and attorney fees relating to the BSO-Dania Fire Department Merger. This item will be placed on the agenda for the next meeting held on May 24, 2011 for more discussion. April 20, 2011 Page 4 of 4 XI. CORRESPONDENCE XII. NEW EMPLOYEE APPLICATIONS XIII. RETIREMENTS / TERMINATIONS 13.1 Michael Cassano left the DROP and started receiving his retirement on April 1, 2011 XIV. OPEN DISCUSSION AND INFORMATION 14.1 FPPTA June 26-June 29, 2011 Conference in Orlando The FPPTA 27th Annual Conference is being held at the Renaissance Sea World Resort during June 26 to June 29, 2011 MOTION by Wardell Lee to approve expenses for any Trustee wishing to attend the FPPTA’s 27th Annual Conference in Orlando in accordance with the trustee travel guidelines. SECOND: Ted Spongross PASSED UNANIMOUSLY 14.2 32nd Annual Police Officers’ and Firefighters’ Pension Trustees’ School in Tallahassee, Florida May 16-18, 2011 The Division of Retirement is having its annual trustee’s school in Tallahassee during May 16-18, 2011 MOTION by Ted Spongross to approve expenses for any Trustee wishing to attend the Division of Retirement 32nd annual trustees school in accordance with the trustee travel guidelines. SECOND: Carolyn Jones PASSED UNANIMOUSLY 14.3 NCPERS Trustee Education Seminar May 21-22, 2011 in Miami NCPERS is having its 2011 Conference with their annual trustee’s school in Miami at the Fontainebleau Hotel during May 21-22, 2011 MOTION by Ted Spongross to approve expenses for any Trustee wishing to attend the NCPERS annual trustees school in accordance with the trustee travel guidelines. SECOND: Wardell Lee PASSED UNANIMOUSLY XV. ATTORNEYS REPORT 15.1 Attorney Ken Harrison discussed various issues with the State and plan changes to reflect the fire fighter portion as a closed plan. MOTION by Ted Spongross for Sugarman & Susskind to review the plan and reflect necessary changes to show the fire fighter portion as a closed plan SECOND: Chairman Larry Rogers PASSED UNANIMOUSLY XVI. ADJOURN MOTION by Carolyn Jones to adjourn meeting SECOND: Ted Spongross Meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM
