Asset classes are chosen to work together in two ways: To achieve an overall return, usually equal to the actuarial assumption and to reduce risk; when one asset class does poorly, other asset classes act as moderators. In selecting asset classes, the factors that are considered are: risk, return and correlation; transaction costs; legal complexity; comfortable holding at least 5% in the asset class; the plan’s specific requirements. The goal is to meet the plan’s required rate of return (now 5.75%) with the list amount of risk.
