Dr. Flynn mentioned that the mural commissioned by Dania Beach “Looking Forward” by Ernesto Maranje recently received awards. III. PRESENTATIONS a) West 1st Ave Streetscape Visioning Presentation – Gianno Feoli, PLA ASLA, Calvin Giordano & Associates, Inc. Gianno Feoli from Calvin, Giordano & Associates explained that today he would present some components of the Master Plan, and he would request the Board’s feedback on what was discussed. He’d start with a brief overview of the project painting designs for intersections and discuss an opportunity for a refresh for the City Hall Roundabout Central Fountain. He gave background on West 1st Avenue and explained what they were looking to do. Lighting, signage, street trees, parking, etc. would be provided for a holistic experience. When he spoke about the fountain, he explained how it was a huge component of the activities and the character of the City Hall area. He spoke about three different options, one of them was keeping the water feature and using mosaic tiles in similar patterns that would be on the intersections. The other two options got rid of the water feature but kept the three tiers on one and just a single tier for the other option. He called for feedback. Co-Chair Schipper asked about deliveries. Mr. Feoli explained that they met with property owners and spoke with the City about policies. Loading zones would be designated. They did not want to negatively affect businesses. Good Public Art Advisory Board Meeting - Minutes 2 June 16, 2025 screening would be provided in order to not limit businesses. Mayor Davis questioned the street painting and maintenance to keep it looking fresh over time. Mr. Feoli answered not to use cheap street paint. Dania’s maintenance should be on a two-to-three-year cycle. He spoke about materials like thermoplastic paints. Mayor Davis felt the highest quality should be used, if possible, to stay nicer longer. He spoke about knowing cost in advance in case there needed to be a change. Dr. Flynn asked about stamped concrete and Mr. Feoli explained about that. Paveway Systems specialize in patterned pavement solutions. Discussion then ensued about the fountain and Dr. Flynn mentioned that a couple of artists proposed changes for the fountain. She further stated that Rosario is a mosaic artist, and mosaic seemed to make sense. Proposals were previously sent to the City. Mr. Feoli thought artists would be a better opportunity with the fountain. He reminded that whenever the fountain would be refurbished, the inside needed to be waterproofed, and the mosaic would only be on the facing of the tiers and the top of the tiers would have a concrete cap. Discussion included the budget and implementation of the project and remembering that the location here was right in front of City Hall. Mayor Davis suggested getting the best of the best suggestions due to this location, giving the Board great options to choose from. Mr. Feoli suggested presenting a montage to the Commission depicting what this could potentially look like using different artist’s work. Discussions opened up on the different opportunities for this space. Mr. Feoli asked if the Board’s preference was for one, three or no tiers and/or water or no water. Dr. Flynn clarified that if there was a Call To Artist, the artist could still re-imagine the space and not just decide on the tier(s) and water to present to the Commission. The fountain was working now but in the past, there were issues. Mr. Feoli reminded that this was a traffic circle and it should not promote a hazard or a distraction and Dr. Flynn reminded that safety was number one. Dr. Flynn asked what would happen if an artist wanted to use the fountain as part of the artwork. Mr. Feoli said that he could explain to the Commission that the Board wanted an opportunity to have a Call To Artist in order to help celebrate the location for this project. IV. ACTION ITEMS a) Veterans Park Mural Concept – Final Review (PA-002-25) (Public Art mural application for a mural located at Veterans Park at the Dania Beach City Hall complex (100 W. Dania Beach Blvd) Dr. Flynn reminded why this was brought back from the May 19, 2025 PAAB Meeting and that Co-Chair Schipper and Board Member Granett were members of both the Public Art Advisory Board and the Dania Beach Improvement Committee. Janet McCombs, Dania Beach Improvement Committee, presented an overview of the project explaining things like on what wall the artist’s, Skyler, beautiful design would be painted. Chair Sharaby asked about the palm trees by the mural and was told that could be decided later on. Dr. Flynn explained that the City could decide about the trees, bushes, etc. after the mural was painted. Mayor Davis reminded that she slated funds from the Earth Day Beach Clean-Up for the Dania Beach Improvement Committee in the amount of 15% from all Lucky Fish sales for that day. Chair Sharaby asked to go over the numbers for the mural. Discussion ensued about money coming out of the PAAB contingency funding to help fund the cost of the mural. Deputy Director Lajoie inquired about her going in front of the City Commission informing that PAAB approved the mural design but did not know the amount of money they would donate yet for the mural. Discussion ensued regarding that this item would be brought back to the PAAB. Mayor Davis said that there was time before this had to go in front of the City Commission giving the PAAB time to decide about a donation towards the project. Motion was made by Board Member Aptakin to recommend approval to the City Commission of the selected artist and vendor for the City Hall Veterans Park Mural and was seconded by Board Member Gironda. Motion passed 5-0 (Co-Chair Schipper and Board Member Granett recuse themselves). V. DISCUSSION ITEMS a) Tri Rail Griffin Road Station Partnership Project – Michael Goodman Dr. Flynn explained that they had a conversation with the City Manager about doing artwork at the Tri Rail Station at Griffin Road. Michael Goodman, Goodman Public Relations, spoke about the meeting with the City Manager also. He informed that he was looking for a collaboration with Dania Beach to initiate the first public art project. He explained that he has been Tri Rail’s external marketing company for twenty-five years and art was his thing. Dr. Flynn called for questions. Co-Chair Schipper commended Mr. Goodman for coming today and said that she rode the Tri Rail. Mr. Goodman said that ridership is definitely up and art would elevate this experience. Funding was discussed and Mr. Goodman had minimal funding but his budget was not finalized. Mayor Davis inquired if the Fort Lauderdale Airport Station sign could change and an example given was Fort Lauderdale Airport Station at Dania Beach. Discussion ensued. Dr. Flynn asked about social media or promotions and Mr. Goodman said there would be a “kickoff” ceremony, information on their website, etc. and Dania Beach would be the first to do artwork in a station. Public Art Advisory Board Meeting - Minutes 3 June 16, 2025 Dr. Flynn reminded that this was a discussion item that did not have to be voted on today but it sounded as if the board was in consensus to make a recommendation to move forward. This could be brought back to the next PAAB Meeting. b) Mural Opportunity – K. Michael Chen, CRA Director Mr. Chen explained that the West 1st Ave Streetscape vision plan was initiated by the CRA. He saw this plan evolve especially with the traffic design at the intersection. He spoke about a 6’ high wall at Fire Station 1 that would be 95’ long and told what transpired with his thought that it would be a great canvas and he made an informal inquiry. The Guy Harvey Arts Museum part of the Nova Research Center was interested in supporting Dania Beach as a hometown and formalized his inquiry. There was a proposed price somewhere between $17,000 and $20,000 that reflected basically the cost of materials. He came here today to see if the PAAB had any interest for further exploration with Guy Harvey and collectively work on what the artist would design. Mr. Chen answered regarding the location of this wall. He thought this would be an interesting combination as Guy Harvey did fish art and all types of naturalist art. So the PAAB could give their ideas and even though Mr. Chen was not part of this board, he thought a nautical theme and explained why. He stated that there was no pre-planned budget for this. It would be up to the PAAB how they wanted to proceed. There was a question as to when the wall was expected to be up and Gianno Feoli gave a little history regarding this underutilized space. Thoughts were to turn it into a public space for activities. Turning it into a park was still a proposal and the wall would ensure no one would get into the Fire Station. He spoke about calling it Founders Park but a park has not been formally approved by the Commission. Mayor Davis asked exactly where the wall would be because that area would be like a historic area. She felt that the art on that wall should align with what went into that area. Mr. Feoli spoke about a timeline mural to celebrate its history. The mayor wanted Guy Harvey art prominently displayed in the City of Dania Beach but maybe not tied to this location because the art should be aligned with what was in that area. Then Mr. Feoli said this wall may not be the best location for Guy Harvey as this wall was essentially a fence wall and it was tucked away. Mr. Chen asked what the Board’s interest was in continuing further discussions on this subject and discussion ensued. Dr. Flynn said the Board sounded excited about this but not necessarily on that wall because the artwork would have to be related to that space. The Mayor felt that they should look for other options for Guy Harvey in Dania Beach. Dr. Flynn would be put in contact with the Foundation in order to have a conversation with them. Mr. Chen answered that he did not know if Guy Harvey would do the painting but he would be doing the design. Mr. Chen felt that a mural could be a reflection of the natural habitant that was part of Dania Beach’s history. It could be wetlands, mangroves, etc. Remember, there were no design suggestions at this time. The wall would be the location he would do it and there was a price estimate but no design recommendations. VI. ADMINISTRATIVE UPDATES a) Creative Visions Shortlist for Proposals Dr. Flynn presented the list of the eight artists selected: 1) Nate Mohler, 2) Sonata Kazimieratiene, 3) Sujin Lim, 4) OSRS Murals, 5) Jason Tetlak, 6) Russell Mason, 7) Timothy Robert and 8) Xavier Cortada. She explained when this would be going in front of the Commission. She said that the other names they had were not going away as there could be other projects that they could be appropriate for. Board Clerk Ibel Larios explained why the date of the September PAAB Meeting had to be changed. Motion was made by Board Member Aptakin to cancel the PAAB July 21, 2025 meeting and was seconded by Co- Chair Schipper. Motion passed 7-0. Motion was made by Board Member Gironda to change the PAAB September 15, 2025 meeting date to September 8, 2025 and was seconded by Board Member Granett. Motion passed 7-0. VII. Attachments • Artist Agreement • Resolution • Mural Application City of Dania Beach NATIONAL CALL TO ARTISTS: Creative Visions: Dania Beach Public Art Initiative Community Development Department "The Ocean in a Drop" – A Community Mosaic Celebrating Connection - Sonata 1. Detailed Project Description Project Statement "The Ocean in a Drop" is a large-scale, sea-inspired ceramic mosaic mural that will be collaboratively created with the residents of Dania Beach. Drawing from the Rumi quote “You are not a drop in the ocean; you are the entire ocean in a drop” and the concept of the ripple effect, the artwork celebrates the idea that each individual holds immense creative potential and that, together, our shared contributions form a powerful, unified whole. The mural will consist of hundreds of individually handcrafted ceramic circles—each made by a community member—arranged into a dynamic wave-like composition. Viewed from a distance, the installation will evoke the movement and interconnectedness of ocean currents, while up close, each “drop” will reveal a unique imprint of its maker’s creativity. Artistic Vision and Objectives This project will: ● Transform a public space into a vibrant landmark celebrating Dania Beach’s coastal identity. ● Engage residents directly in the creation process, fostering pride and belonging. ● Serve as a visual metaphor for interconnectedness, collaboration, and community spirit. ● Strengthen bonds between artists, residents, city administration, and local institutions. Artist & Team ●Lead Artist: Sonata Kazimieraitiene – Concept design, workshop facilitation, fabrication oversight, installation coordination. ●Assistant Fabricators: Local ceramicists/artists (to be selected) – Assist in firing, glazing, mounting. ●Community Partners: Schools, senior centers, community organizations – Host and participate in workshops. Insurance and Legal Compliance Manotiles LLC carries liability insurance meeting municipal public art requirements and will comply with all City of Dania Beach legal, safety, and permitting guidelines. Creative Visions: Installation Proposal Jason Tetlak 4424 Antisdale Street Jacksonville, Florida 32205 jason@tetlak.com 904.422.8810 IG: @jasontetlak Project Statement My concept for this project is a temporary art installation called “Inspirations” that consists of three parts; a large cube constructed on site, four separate artworks for the faces of the cube, and four viewing windows for the public to see the !nished artwork. The 3-dimensional cube will be constructed of either a wooden or metal framework that will be covered by exterior grade sheets of 4x8 plywood or similar material. Each side of the cube will consist of two panels, making the !nished cube 8 feet by 8 feet. This wooden cube will be covered with a different interactive artwork on each of it’s four sides. Called “red reveal” images, this interactive design technique allows me to hide messages or images in the art that can only be seen with the use of a red !lter. For the design of these artworks, I have chosen four quotes that I !nd inspirational and I will use a variety of fonts and type treatments to create layouts using these quotes that cover each of the four sides of the cube. In order for the public to see the hidden messages, I will install four red viewing windows nearby for people to randomly !nd and use, essentially creating a hide and seek or scavenger hunt style game to encourage people to search out the next window in order to see the hidden messages. These hidden windows will be made of red acrylic and will be temporarily fashioned to existing structures like sign poles, trees, and fences using straps that can be easily removed when the project is over. Artistic Vision This project aligns with the initiative goals by helping to transform Dania Beach into a canvas for public creativity, by enhancing the city’s art program, broadening the scope of public art, and re-imagining Dania Beach’s public spaces. By installing this temporary interactive work in a public area, the community will be confronted with art in an unexpected place, something that I strive to do with my work on a regular basis. Seeing art outside of the typical gallery or museum setting creates new access to art for many people who would not normally be exposed to it. I have seen !rst hand how these types of projects can transform public spaces and have an uplifting affect on the people who come in contact with it. Team Members The lead artist on this project is Jason Tetlak, who will handle all aspects of the design and coordinate the fabrication and installation of the !nished work. The fabrication will be handled by a South Florida company sub-contracted by the artist, this company will be selected once the project has been approved. The company’s responcibilities will be to build the box and install it in the !nal location, as well as remove it once the project duration is complete. The red viewing windows to be installed around the site will be created and installed by the lead artist. 1 - PROJECT DESCRIPTION Renderings and Mockups I will be working with a fabricator to build and install the cube, which for this project will be constructed of a metal or wooden framework to create the underlying structure. Two 4 foot by 8 foot pieces of exterior grade plywood or similar material will be attached to each side, creating an 8 foot by 8 foot cube. The top of the cube can be left open, or closed off with two additional sheets of plywood, based on the preference of the selection committee. 1 - PROJECT DESCRIPTION (CONTINUED) This is an example of a red viewing window for a recently completed project. For this installation I would likely use something smaller and less conspicuous to make it more of an adventure for the public to discover the hidden messages. Based on the surroundings of the location where the project is installed this, could included attaching the viewing windows to existing street signage, fense posts, trees, or like is seen in this example, having them free standing. Artwork Artwork viewed with red !lter 1 - PROJECT DESCRIPTION (CONTINUED) Artwork Visuals Below are the visuals that will be used to cover each side of the 8x8 cube. On the left is the view the public will see of the artwork, and on the right is what the same image looks like when viewed through the four red viewing windows that will be installed around the location. Artwork Artwork viewed with red !lter 1 - PROJECT DESCRIPTION (CONTINUED) 1 - PROJECT DESCRIPTION (CONTINUED) Location Requirements This project is not site speci!c. It is exible on where it can be installed and I look forward to working with the selection committee to identify the best location for it. Space Requirements This project can be installed in a number of different locations, but would work best in an area that has a large open space, preferably at least 30 x 30 feet. There are no power or weather requirements for this installation, and because the project is a temporary 8x8 cube with an open bottom, the only surface preparations needed would be to locate a space with a relatively at 10x10 area. There are no special requirements for access or security considerations. 2 -SITE SPECIFICATIONS This project is designed to encourage the public to engage with the artwork by making the messaging something that must be discovered through exploration of the space. A post install artist talk to allow the public to ask questions and learn about the creative process can be arranged if requested. 3 - COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Installation Timline This project can be fabricated off site and completed in advance of the scheduled installation of the work so that the !nished piece can be moved into place and installed quickly. Likely in only a couple of hours. The accompanying red viewing windows would also be pre-fabricated and simply need to be installed at the same time. Duration of Artwork This temporary installation is meant to be on display for four to six weeks, but can remain up for as long as 12 weeks. 4 - PROJECT LOGISTICS TIER 2 Cube fabrication/installation/removal (sub-contracted) $5,000 Supplies and materials $2,500 Travel expenses $1,500 Red window fabrication/installation $1,500 Insurance $1,000 Artist fees $5,000 10% contingency $1,000 Total $17,500 5 -BUDGET BREAKDOWN THANK YOU! osrsart@gmail.com www.oftenseenrarelyspoken.com 502.643.0426 City of Dania Beach  100 W Dania Beach Boulevard Dania Beach, FL 33004 1. Detailed Project Description • Project statement (from your initial 500-word concept) • Artistic vision and objectives - how your work aligns with initiative goals • Artist team members and their roles • Detailed drawings, renderings, or digital mockups OSRS is proposing one of our Tourism Series murals, a collection designed specifically for municipal and community projects. This series features large, dimensional letters spelling DANIA BEACH, surrounded by imagery that reflects the character and culture of the community all brought to life in our signature creative style. These murals result in vibrant public artworks that locals feel a genuine connection to and that naturally engage younger audiences . The work is designed to spark a sense of pride, create lasting memories, and create a landmark in a place that people call home. The style is bold and bright, yet approachable and not overly complex. Our five-person team includes two business professionals and three graphic designers, and we pride ourselves on painting every project together, on site, as a unified team. Over the past nine years, we’ve completed more than 250 murals across a dozen states. 2. Site Specifications • Location requirements - specify if site-specific or flexible placement • Technical and space requirements: • Power needs and electrical specifications • Weather protection requirements • Ground/surface preparation needs • Access requirements for installation/removal • Security considerations OSRS offers exceptional versatility in both painting and design. Enclosed in this proposal is a custom-created mural concept that can be scaled to fit any wall in Dania Beach. The bigger, the bolder, the better!. Our team is experienced with both interior and exterior installations, requiring no special weather protection. Preparation includes power washing (when necessary) and applying a high-quality primer base coat to maximize longevity. For added durability, we offer a UV-protectant clear coat to preserve color vibrancy for years to come. We require no on-site security during painting and maintain full commercial insurance coverage. Our team is fully trained in safety protocols for large-scale equipment, including BOOM lifts for high-rise projects. Should removal ever be necessary, the mural can easily be painted over with standard paints. 3. Community Engagement • Strategy and goals to include a community engagement element Because we are Kentucky based, community engagement looks a little different for us than for Florida locals. We know that every community has its own way of connecting with public art but there is a throughline, the public should be a part of public art. For our engagement process, we ask for community feedback on which elements to use surrounding the dimensional lettering. That can look like state flowers or plants, local relevant architecture, or images of local industry. We also can use engagement to align mural imagery back to the wall we are painting on. An example from our previous work is using imagery of older cameras, televisions & phones for a wall on a building occupied by a media company. We find this community engagement process is simple to carry out while effectively creating genuine connection with locals after the mural is painted. 4. Project Logistics • Installation timeline • Duration of artwork (if temporary, specify exact timeframe) The most time and care go into the design process, which makes it the most time intesive part, usually taking 30–90 days as we refine ideas and collaborate until the vision feels just right. Once the design is finalized, the transformation happens fast. Most murals are painted within just 2–5 days. On the right wall with the right conditions and the right preparation, these works of art can endure for more than 25 years, standing as a long-term part of the community. To keep the colors as bold and vibrant as the day they were painted, we also offer a UV-protectant finish, which can extend brightness for an extra decade and be refreshed over time. 5. Comprehensive Budget Breakdown • Tier 1: Under $10,000 • Tier 2: $10,001 - $20,000 • Tier 3: $20,001 - $30,000 • Tier 4: $30,001 - $50,000 We aim to paint projects as large as possible to achieve maximum visual impact, with TIER 4 being the preferred scale. For example, in Indiana we completed a mural spanning more than 300 feet on the side of a six-story bank office, and in Ohio we painted a 200 x 15 ft retaining wall. These large-scale works demonstrate our ability to successfully execute projects of significant size and visibility. Both projects taking less than 10 days start to finish. Costs vary based on the specific wall and its needs but include the following components: Painting install – materials & labor $35/sq ft for walls under 250 sq ft $30/sq ft for walls 251 – 500 sq ft $25/sq ft for walls over 500 sq ft + UV-Protection application (optional) 10% of painting cost + lift rental if needed (estimated $1,200 for 7 days) + $500/day travel expense for food, gas & lodging (estimated 7 days) + additional wall prep as needed (power washing, concrete scraping, stucco repairs etc) Design included at no cost * 9. Insurance and Legal Compliance • Review insurance to ensure requirements can be met for the project. Attached is a copy of our current $1,000,000 commercial painting insurance policy, which we maintain year-round. Since our founding in 2016, we have operated with a perfect safety record—zero incidents or claims—demonstrating our commitment to professionalism and safety on every project. This project is designed to serve as both a striking visual landmark and a source of community pride, with opportunities for local residents and students to participate directly in the painting process. With over 20 years of experience creating public artworks nationwide, I have seen how murals can transform spaces, inspire civic pride, and create a lasting cultural legacy. My designs for Tides of Time are flexible in location and scale, ensuring the City can select the best fit for impact, visibility, and budget. Thank you for considering this proposal. It would be an honor to contribute a lasting artistic legacy to Dania Beach. Sincerely, Russell Mason Lead Artist Tides of Time: A Celebration of Dania Beach Lead Artist: Russell Mason – Design & Installation Project Overview Tides of Time is a proposed large-scale, permanent mural for the City of Dania Beach. This vibrant, dynamic artwork will honor the city’s rich cultural heritage, historical significance, and stunning natural beauty. Three original design concepts and four potential locations are presented, offering flexibility across various price tiers. Each design is tailored to create a lasting visual landmark that reflects the unique spirit of Dania Beach. Public art has the power to inspire pride, spark dialogue, and strengthen community identity—this project aims to do just that. Durability & Weather Protection The mural will be created using professional-grade materials to ensure longevity and vibrancy for at least 15 years without fading: Primer: Sherwin-Williams Loxon Top Coat: Sherwin-Williams Latitude Acrylic Sealer: Minwax Polycrylic Protective Finish This combination provides exceptional resistance to UV exposure, humidity, salt air, and seasonal changes. Detailed Project Description: Project Statement Through The Underwater: Dania Beach, I propose a participatory, multi-phase public art activation that spans temporary installations, pop-ups, and a culminating permanent sculpture—all designed to build environmental awareness and encourage civic engagement around climate change and sea level rise. At the heart of the project is a simple but powerful act—displaying one’s elevation above sea level. Participants will be invited to claim a free, customized Underwater Yard Sign that displays their home’s or business’s elevation. These elevation markers feature a background image of one of my original Antarctic Ice Paintings, created using ice and sediment collected during a National Science Foundation expedition to the South Pole. The signs also include a QR code, allowing anyone who sees them to scan and instantly access educational resources. Working in close collaboration with the Cortada Foundation, we will stage temporary pop-up events across the city under the banner of “Elevation Station” — a mobile education and art-making hub surrounded by an installation of Underwater Yard Signs. These activations can appear at the Dania Beach Pier, Frost Park, and especially Dania Pointe during events like the Night Market and Family Sundays on the Lawn. At these events, residents can learn their elevation, personalize their yard sign, get a “HELLO my elevation is ___” sticker, win a limited-edition Underwater t-shirt, and join the citywide public art intervention. We will also engage local volunteers to work with Dania Beach businesses—particularly in Dania Pointe—to display elevation signs in their front windows or green space. Alongside these distributed markers, we will install Underwater-themed banners along US-1 and other key streets to spark awareness. Finally, the project will culminate in the creation of a permanent sculpture, crafted from powder-coated aluminum, that memorializes the city’s current elevation and celebrates those who took part. This public artwork could be placed at City Hall or Frost Park, and will serve as a lasting educational landmark. To celebrate the project’s arc, we will host a community unveiling event, where all participants, volunteers, city leaders, and residents will be invited to gather, reflect, and dedicate the sculpture together. Artistic vision and objectives The Underwater: Dania Beach transforms the city into a living canvas for public creativity by engaging residents directly in an interactive, citywide climate art intervention. At its core, the project turns a scientific fact—Dania Beach’s elevation—into a shared visual language that appears in yards, storefronts, parks, and public corridors. This work directly addresses the Initiative’s goals by: ● Fostering artist-led community engagement: Pop-up “Elevation Station” events and distributed elevation markers invite residents, businesses, and schools to participate, sparking conversations about sea level rise and the city’s environmental future. ● Narrating the city’s story: By mapping and displaying local elevations, the project tells a place-based story about Dania Beach’s unique geography and vulnerability, while celebrating community pride in climate resilience. ● Collaborating across sectors: The project involves the Cortada Foundation, local volunteers, Dania Beach businesses, civic leaders, and schools—linking the art directly to municipal, commercial, and educational stakeholders. ● Reimagining public spaces: Temporary signs, banners, and interactive stations turn familiar streets, parks, and gathering spaces into participatory galleries. The permanent sculpture serves as a long-term landmark, embedding this community conversation into the city’s visual identity. In form and intent, the project embodies dynamic, short-term activations—pop-ups, street banners, temporary signs—while culminating in a permanent, site-specific sculpture. This arc ensures both the immediacy of interactive engagement and the endurance of a public art legacy. Artist team members ● Xavier Cortada – Artist Conceptualizes and designs the full project; designs the sculpture; oversees all artistic direction, fabrication, and installation; delivers speech at unveiling event. ● Adam Roberti – Executive Director, Cortada Foundation Coordinates logistics, scheduling, and partnerships with local businesses, schools, and civic organizations; manages Elevation Station activations; oversees volunteer recruitment and training; directs project documentation, outreach, and digital engagement. Detailed drawings, renderings, or digital mockups Below see an example of a metal elevation sculpture (the final number will depend on the location we select in Dania Beach) and an Elevation Station hosted on Miami Beach. 2. Site Specifications: Location requirements While the project is flexible and can adapt to many public spaces across Dania Beach, each individual sign and artwork will reflect the site-specific elevation of its location. The permanent sculpture will be uniquely designed for its final placement site. Technical and space requirements No power, security, or weather protection is needed. Sites should be publicly accessible with space to host temporary activations. The wall selected for the metal sculpture will simply need to be free from any objects on or in front of it. 3. Community Engagement: Community engagement is integral. Our Elevation Station pop-ups will serve as interactive hubs where residents can learn and participate, while the yard signs, stickers, and t-shirts act as both educational tools and visual statements. By decentralizing the artwork across yards, parks, and businesses, we create a citywide gallery that makes climate science visible in everyday spaces. Throughout the project, we will work in collaboration with local schools, volunteers, and nonprofit partners to ensure inclusive engagement and broad participation, especially in neighborhoods not typically included in creative programming. 4. Project Logistics: Installation timeline ● January 2026 – Project launch, outreach, volunteer recruitment, business engagement. Install Underwater street banners along US-1 and key corridors. ● February–April 2026 – 6 Elevation Station pop-up activations at Dania Pointe, Dania Beach Pier, Frost Park, and/or neighborhood parks. Solar Obelisks Creative Visions Project Dania Beach Project Proposal + Concept Renders Nate Mohler - 2025 Nate Mohler - Concept Sketches Solar Obelisks Flare Obelisk Sun Obelisk Mars Obelisk Moon Obelisk Solar Obelisks Nate Mohler Nate Mohler - Creative Visions Project Dania Beach Project Statement I am honored to advance to the next stage of the Creative Visions public art initiative and to present a detailed proposal for Solar Obelisks in Dania Beach. This project is one of my more ambitious ventures and a culmination of my exploration with media, sculpture, and environmental storytelling. I’m really excited for this opportunity to create something innovative yet engaging—an installation that resonates with the identity of Dania Beach while inviting reflection of the surrounding environment. Solar Obelisks are a series of illuminated sculptures that serve as planetary antennas—refracting solar rays during the day and glowing with stored energy at night. Made from recycled plastic, each obelisk varies in form, size and style, with a couple crowned by a radiant, “solar flare.” Installed on land or above water, the transparent material casts colorful sun shadows creating a dynamic interplay of light in the day and internal illumination at night. The work channels the interrelationship between earth and sun, human and nature—echoing ancient monuments that once marked time, light, and ancestry. Designed as a modular field of semi-transparent, refractive light sculptures; each obelisk is fabricated from recycled eco-acrylic or PETG and embedded with addressable LEDs that subtly shift from day to night. Weatherproof, re-enforced, and self-contained, the sculptures are designed to spark curiosity, serve as a gathering point, and inspire reflection. Beyond their visual presence, they embody a commitment to renewable energy and circular design through the integration of solar-panels or connected directly to a local power source. The Creative Visions program’s focus on community engagement, sustainability, and artistic interventions is very inspiring and I look forward to adapting this sculpture series to be site specific and responsive to its location. I envision Solar Obelisks as both a striking visual landmark and a catalyst for connection—a work that celebrates Dania Beach’s natural beauty, its relationship to water and sunlight, and its commitment to forward-thinking public art. I look forward to the possibility of realizing Solar Obelisks in Dania Beach, contributing to the city’s public art legacy while fostering a shared sense of wonder, reflection, and environmental awareness. Warm regards, Nate Mohler Solar Obelisks Artist: Nate Mohler LIGHT At night, each Solar Obelisk is internally illuminated with addressable RGB LEDs, allowing for precise control over color, brightness, and animation. Using TouchDesigner, I will program a custom ambient light sequence that unfolds slowly over time—mimicking the natural rhythms of breath, energy flow, and solar radiance. Each sculpture becomes both a vessel and a node in a larger interconnected system, capable of dynamic choreography while maintaining an overall meditative presence. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION Each Solar Obelisk is a solid, monolithic sculpture created two ways, either via pressure stacked sheets of eco-acrylic layers or 3D printed with UV-stable, semi-transparent and recycled PETG. Designed specifically for outdoor environments, an internal steel rod will be act as the support structure and lighting system to ensure structural integrity and resilience against weather, wind, and temperature fluctuations. The translucent surface is optimized for light diffusion, allowing internal lighting to softly radiate outward and daytime sun to cast colored shadows. Internally, each obelisk houses a self-contained, weatherproof LED lighting system with addressable RGB pixel strips mounted to the central support rod. These lighting systems are networked together via a wireless bluetooth receiver (e.g., Art-Net or sACN), allowing synchronized control and choreographed animation across multiple sculptures. The taller obelisks and the crown-like Solar Flare elements are shipped in modular segments for ease of transport. On-site, the central support rod is anchored in place and the shell is slid on top ensuring a minimal interior structure. Sculptures can be pole-mounted with ground anchors and base plate or suspended via overhead rigging depending on the site’s infrastructure. Additional anchoring or ballast options can be provided to meet local safety codes and environmental conditions. Nate Mohler - Creative Visions Project Dania Beach Solar Obelisks Artist Team Nate Mohler – Lead Artist & Designer As lead artist, Nate Mohler will oversee the creative vision, overall design, and lighting integration for Solar Obelisks. With a practice rooted in media art, light, and environmental storytelling, Mohler will be responsible for concept development, form design, lighting programming, and on-site artistic direction. His expertise in blending technology, public space, and narrative ensures that the final work is both visually compelling and thematically resonant. Dive Design – Fabrication Support Dive Design will provide large-format robotic arm 3D printing services for the sculpture shell. Known for their innovative approach to design and fabrication, Dive Design specializes in translating complex, organic forms into durable, high-quality printed structures. They will work closely with Mohler to ensure the technical precision, structural stability, and aesthetic quality of each obelisk. Solar Punks – Solar Power Integration If we move forward with solar power, Solar Punks will serve as sustainability and renewable energy consultants for the project, designing and integrating the solar power systems that will power the obelisks after sunset. Their expertise in clean energy technology will ensure the installation is both energy-efficient and resilient to the coastal environment, while reinforcing the project’s commitment to ecological responsibility. Nate Mohler - Creative Visions Project Dania Beach Fabrication Process: The Solar Obelisks can be produced using two distinct, sustainable fabrication methods, each offering unique aesthetic and structural qualities. Method 1 – CNC-Cut Eco-Acrylic Discs: The first method to fabricate sculptures includes pressure stacking thin, tinted Eco-Acrylic sheets—made from 100% recycled, UV-stable material—CNC-cut into stacked discs of varying diameters with a central bore for an internal stainless steel support structure. The discs are stacked in sequence without spacers, creating a continuous outer surface, and are secured with a machined pressure cap. This method achieves a clean, polished finish, precise edge alignment, and vibrant light diffusion through the acrylic, while allowing for lightweight production, easy replacement of damaged components, and modular reconfiguration for site specific installations. Method 2 – Large-Format 3D Printing: Alternatively, our team has been exploring using a robotic arm outfitted with a custom 3D printing extruder capable of printing on a 6-foot bed, recycled plastic pellets are melted and extruded directly through a nozzle. The robotic arm moves fluidly along programmed tool paths, building the forms layer by layer with precise control over geometry and texture. This approach produces tall, semi-transparent sculptures with organic contours, minimal material waste, and a distinctive striated surface. However, this process is less tested and more expensive. Nate Mohler - Creative Visions Project Dania Beach Solar Obelisks Locations Solar Obelisks are designed with a modular layout that allows them to adapt to a wide range of environments, from waterfronts and parks to urban plazas and community gateways. Each installation will be tailored to its specific site through consultation with city staff, engineers, and local stakeholders, ensuring optimal placement for visibility, safety, and community interaction. This site-specific approach allows the arrangement, scale, and anchoring methods of the obelisks to be customized to the unique spatial, environmental, and cultural context of Dania Beach, enhancing both their visual impact and community relevance. Community Engagement Community engagement for Solar Obelisks will combine education, performance, and interactivity. I’m interested in partnering with local schools and community centers to host workshops or artist talks exploring solar power, recycled materials, and the creative process behind the installation, fostering both environmental awareness and artistic curiosity. The installation can also become a stage for nighttime gatherings—“light ceremonies” where the obelisks’ illumination is synchronized to live performances by local musicians, creating a shared cultural experience. Additionally, if programming budget allows we can develop a webpage for residents to temporarily change the lighting colors and patterns each evening, making the artwork a living reflection of community expression. Duration As the inaugural installation of this series, Solar Obelisks will be presented as a temporary activation lasting between 3–6 months. Due to the significant cost and resources required to produce each obelisk, the sculptures are intended to be reused and reconfigured for future exhibitions in other locations. At the conclusion of the Dania Beach installation, the components will be carefully disassembled and recycled into subsequent site-specific presentations, ensuring both sustainability and the continued life of the series. Nate Mohler - Creative Visions Project Dania Beach Solar Obelisks Installation & Production Timeline Phase 1 – Site Consultation & Planning (1 month) Conduct site visit and meet with City of Dania Beach staff, engineers, and community stakeholders to confirm placement, power access, anchoring, and any permitting needs. Final dimensions will be determined by a Florida licensed structural engineer. COLOR SYSTEM 16 As an internationally exhibited artist with over two decades of experience in sculpture and site specific public art, I create sculptural installations that transform shared spaces into emotionally resonant landmarks. My work often begins with the question, “What might this space have become if the people using it had their desires met?” I aim to activate public environments by offering poetic, reflective forms that invite communal imagination and emotional connection. For the Creative Visions: Dania Beach Public Art Initiative, I propose a permanent public sculpture titled Silver Lining with Corals. This work consists of a cloud shaped human body accompanied by two small coral shaped pieces. The human form suggests a dreamer thinking, while the coral shapes evoke the beauty of marine ecosystems, offering a quiet tribute to Dania Beach’s natural environment and cultural spirit. The installation is designed for a prominent and accessible outdoor location such as a public park, near a civic building, or along a neighborhood pathway. It is intended as a long term presence that invites people to sit nearby, reflect, take photos, or gather around. Fabricated in durable, weather resistant materials, the sculpture will be built to withstand environmental exposure and continuous public interaction. Lighting elements may be included to gently illuminate the work at night, enhancing its visibility and atmosphere. PROJECT DESCRIPTION 17 Community connection is central to this project. Prior to installation, I hope to collaborate with local organizations, schools, or storytellers to host short drawing workshops or conversations around memory, dreams, and the sea. Reflections and phrases from these exchanges can be embedded or etched into the sculpture base or surrounding ground, allowing the final piece to reflect voices from within Dania Beach itself. While the call emphasizes temporary projects, this proposal demonstrates how a permanent sculpture can achieve similar goals through subtle and enduring engagement. Silver Lining with Corals is not only a visual landmark but a space for emotional pause, a place where people can experience quiet beauty, reflect on the world around them, and feel part of a shared story. My past works often feature cloud and body inspired forms that bring softness, metaphor, and emotional resonance into urban contexts. This proposal continues that trajectory while introducing coral as a symbol of healing, memory, and connection to nature. I believe Silver Lining with Corals offers Dania Beach a sculpture that can grow with the city, becoming a familiar and beloved part of everyday life. PROJECT DESCRIPTION 18 The vision of Silver Lining with Corals is to create a sculptural landmark that fosters joy, reflection, and connection in the heart of Dania Beach. By integrating monumental coral-inspired forms with the gentle presence of a cloud-shaped human figure, the work celebrates the city’s natural beauty, cultural spirit, and relationship to the sea. The installation seeks to transform an everyday public space into a welcoming destination where residents and visitors can pause, gather, and experience a sense of calm and wonder. The project celebrates nature and place by drawing on the coral reef as a symbol of resilience, healing, and interdependence. Its organic forms and warm, uplifting presence offer a visual tribute to Dania Beach’s marine environment and coastal heritage, reinforcing the city’s identity as a place where nature and community coexist. At the same time, the interplay between the dreamer figure and coral shapes invites moments of quiet contemplation and shared imagination, encouraging visitors to connect not only with the artwork but also with one another and with their own sense of place. Community engagement is also integral to the vision. Through a coral drawing workshop and conversations with local residents, schools, and cultural groups, the project will incorporate community voices into its final design, ensuring that the sculpture reflects the stories, memories, and aspirations of the people who live and work in Dania Beach. By blending poetic form, symbolic meaning, and community participation, Silver Lining with Corals aligns with the Creative Visions initiative’s mission to create art that is visually compelling, deeply connected to its environment, and meaningful to the people it serves. The work is designed to endure physically and emotionally, becoming a familiar and inspiring presence for years to come. Dramatic angles fuse together to explore the full potential of optical movement, while larger-than-life characters create a 3-D depth that pops out of the frame. Colorful skies capture the attention of the passerby, while enigmatic storylines invite them to learn more about the area. My customized designs make use of the most iconic and timeless elements of each city, with flowing compositions that complement the architecture of each space. These murals are filled with a plethora of details and hidden gems, so every time viewers see them, they will notice a new part of the story. They are pieces that spark many conversations, giving viewers a new sense of wonder and possibility. I have created a plethora of murals for public spaces, universities and cities; working with city planners and community leaders to organize many large-scale art projects. I recently created a 412 ft NFL mural for a new football stadium for the Jacksonvil le Jaguars (2023), and a 101 Freeway underpass mural in Salinas for the Clean California project (2023). My work has been featured in various media outlets, including Juxtapoz, Artillery, NBC, KCRW, and hardcover books in print. My gallery paintings have shown in solo exhibitions at TEDx Conferences, Bergamot Station, the A+D Museum, and the Lancaster Museum of Art and History. Working with the community is my favorite part of being a public artist. My murals focus on the aesthetics of community, incorporating recognizable city structures into a kaleidoscopic landscape. The scenes are designed to inspire viewers to take a second look at the familiar world with fresh eyes and imagine what it is like to see from a different perspective. My proposals are always customizable, ensuring that the elements of each design will fit perfectly for every location. Site Specifications • This mural will be specifically created for Olsen Middle School on the main entrance wall. I reached out to the principal of the school, Janet Giancarli, and she was very excited about the possibility of a large mural to inspire students. Olsen Middle School is an iCAN magnet school that serves many economically disadvantaged students. • The wall is approx. 20 feet tall and 120 feet long. The details of the mural will be painted on Polytab (an archival mural cloth) and installed on location. Although direct painting is also a possibility, Polytab is usually the preferred method because it requires less time on site (2-3 days). • I can either use a lift or tall ladder to reach the high sections of the mural. • There will we water and electricity available while working on the site. • The final coat will be a weather resistant anti-graffiti coat that protects the mural from all weather conditions. Graffiti can be easily cleaned off, saving the mural. • I will use a long tarp to protect the floor. • For this installation, I will work during the time that school is not in session. • I will work with the school to address any security issues during installation. Community Engagement Janet and I will work together to collect student input about what they think is best for this mural. I will schedule a brainstorming/sketch session with students where I explain the history of mural making, show examples, and ask students to draw what they want to see on the wall. These drawings will inspire the final mural design. My design process always starts with a ton of research about the city- it’s history, culture, and global significance. After my initial designs are finished, I always make adjustments based on suggestions from the community. The characters and objects can be customized, and I often take photos of local community leaders who are interested in appearing as characters in the mural. I also participate in artist talks throughout the mural creation and after completion, in person and online. I keep an active social media presence to show the public each step of the process, with progress shots, interviews and time-lapse videos. I am also active in community service, using art to create social change. If there are any community art groups in Dania Beach, I would love to connect with them. I can meet any inspiring artists, community leaders or other interested parties during my visits. Sample Designs The final design will come after brainstorming sessions with students, but here are some examples of potential designs. Project Logistics Timeline Week 1 Creative Sketching with Students. These drawings will inspire the mural. Week 2-3 Mural Creation on Polytab canvas in my studio.
