The Home Beautification Program supported work on 40 homes, along with assistance to 22 additional homes through Area Agency on Aging funding to help seniors safely age in place, and three block rebuilds, including a home owned by a veteran. In addition to CRA-funded projects, other partnerships enabled support for Veteran Post 209. The program’s efforts extended beyond painting and landscaping to include safety improvements such as ramps, door frames, landings, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, hurricane preparedness, overgrowth removal, exterior wall and fascia repairs, and addressing code enforcement issues, all aimed at stabilizing neighborhoods and ensuring residents can remain safe in their homes. Executive Director Sosa-Cruz clarified the scope and funding of the city’s housing assistance efforts, noting that the Home Beautification Program focuses on exterior improvements and is currently budgeted for 40 homes, while the Safe at Home Program addresses interior needs and is funded at $50,000 to serve 50 homes. Expanding the scope or increasing funding would require budget decisions and likely reduce the number of households served.
