Currently, the City Charter (Part III, Article 1, Section 2) provides in pertinent part that the compensation of the City Commission shall be fixed "by resolution". However, a conflicting 1977 ordinance has been discovered in the City Code of Ordinances, which fixed compensation at the rate of $300.00 per month for the Mayor and $250.00 per month for City Commissioners. The ordinance directly conflicts with the Charter provision and it is recommended that the 1977 ordinance simply be repealed. As a related matter, while the City Commission has fixed its compensation in recent years by resolution, it was the express intent of the City Commission that a mechanism be put into place, so that the annual salary for elected officials, once established, is periodically adjusted based on the same cost of living adjustment as is made to salaries for general employees of the City. Consequently, an ordinance repealing the outdated and conflicting "compensation ordinance", and an amending resolution adding the new officials (Mayor Castro, Commissioner Bertino) and providing that all officials' salaries will be adjusted at the same rate and time as is done for general employees, are presented for consideration and adoption.
