RE: New Vehicle Purchase
Three (3) vehicles have been budgeted as part of the continuing vehicle and equipment replacement
program during fiscal year 2005. In the past, this department has prepared a preventative
maintenance program to replace outdated vehicles. Although the City has an adequate vehicle
maintenance program in place, our minimal vehicle maintenance staff faces serious challenges when
attempting to reduce downtime as a result of vehicle failures generated by the age of some of the
equipment. In 2004, approximately $25,000.00 was dedicated to address vehicle breakdowns alone.
Preventative maintenance procedures play a key role in limiting vehicle down time and its related
maintenance costs once vehicles have reached their useful life. Further, following an extremely busy
hurricane season, it has become evident to this Department that proper mobility following the
aftermath of a hurricane is a critical component of operability and damage assessment. As a result,
we are recommending the purchase of two (2) F-250 pick up trucks and a Ford Explorer 4X4. The
pick up trucks will replace current trucks that are 10 to 15 years old. The Explorer will replace one of
our older Rangers, and will allow adequate mobility through fallen debris, and flooded areas following
0 tropical storm event. All vehicles are being purchased off of the Florida Sheriffs Association
ontract and will have extended warranties as well as being equipped for the Division's needs.
