HomeMy WebLinkAbout1324 - MINUTES - City Commission MINUTES DANIA BEACH CITY COMMISSION WORKSHOP MEETING JAN UARY 15, 2002 1. Call to order Mayor Flury called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. 2. Roll Call: Present: Mayor: Pat Flury Vice-Mayor: Robert Chunn Commissioners: John Bertino Bob Mikes City Attorney: Tom Ansbro City Manager: Ivan Pato City Clerk: Charlene Johnson Absent: Commissioner: C.K. McElyea 3. Discussion of upcoming legislative session with Senator Steve Geller. Senator Steve Geller explained that his senate district is quite extensive and that he serves eight (8) cities in Broward County. Senator Geller has served in the House of Representatives since 1988 and as Senator since 1998. He is the longest serving Democrat in the delegation and is one of two Democrats serving as Committee Chairs in the Republican Senate and has managed to maintain very good bipartisan ties with both parties. Senator Geller presented his extensive National and State committee memberships and advised that his main office is located in Hallandale City Hall and that he holds a branch office in La Belle. In regards to reapportionment of the district boundary lines, Senator Geller explained that Senator Sanderson is trying to obtain jurisdiction over the airport and Port Everglades of which some areas lie in Dania Beach. Based on the current district map, Senator Geller expected to serve all areas of Dania Beach south of 1-595, except for about 1500 people located near the airport and Port Everglades. Senator Geller advised that the current plan being submitted is S10003 and suggested that the City contact Senator Webster through a letter or resolution expressing opposition to the City district lines from being split. Mayor Flury advised that she had attended the Reapportionment Committee session a number of months ago and stated the City's opposition to being split. (Resolution No. 2001-185 adopted September 25, 2001. Senator Geller commented on possible changes that may be made to the House seats and advised that the House map was due out on January 23 and the Senate map has already • been distributed.
