A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA
BEACH, FLORIDA, OFFERING CONDITIONAL SUPPORT OF THE
FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION'S PLAN TO WIDEN
SHERIDAN STREET (STATE ROAD 822) FROM DIXIE HIGHWAY TO
EAST OF U.S. 1 (FEDERAL HIGHWAY), SAID SUPPORT TO BE
SUBJECT TO THE ACQUISITION OF ENTIRE PARCELS FOR THOSE
PROPERTIES ABUTTING U.S. 1 AND SHERIDAN STREET;
DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS
RESOLUTION TO THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION AND OTHER INTERESTED AGENCIES;
DIRECTING THE CITY MANAGER TO MEET WITH FDOT STAFF AS
REQUIRED; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Transportation ("FDOT") held a public hearing
on January 31, 2002 for purposes of soliciting input concerning the proposed FDOT Plan (Work
Project No. 4110963) to widen Sheridan Street (State Road 822) from four to six moving lanes
(Dixie Highway to east of U.S. 1) and to expand the number of turn lanes at the intersection of
Sheridan Street and U.S. 1; and
WHEREAS, in addition to the full acquisition of properties located on the north side of
Sheridan Street west of U.S. 1, the FDOT Plan also includes:
a) The partial acquisition of properties on the west side of U.S. 1 from Sheridan
Street to SW 13"Street, and
b) The partial acquisition of properties on the north side of Sheridan Street from
Federal Highway to east of SE 2"d Avenue; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF DANIA BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS:
Section 1. The foregoing "Whereas" clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as being
true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution upon adoption hereof.
1 RESOLUTION NO. 2002-015
Section 2. That the City Commission of the City of Dania Beach finds that the partial
acquisition of parcels on U. S. 1 and Sheridan Street:
a) Reduces or eliminates required off-street parking for existing buildings, forcing
occupants, tenants, or customers to park on adjacent residential streets, resulting in increased
traffic hazards to residents of adjacent residential neighborhoods, or, renders said existing
buildings unusable for their intended purpose (i.e., functionally obsolete), resulting in increased
vacancy rates and physical deterioration from lack of use, and
b) Reduces or eliminates existing open space separating Sheridan Street from
adjacent residential neighborhoods, resulting in reduced opportunities for additional landscaping
and improved drainage.
Section 3. That the City Commission, in making the above referenced findings,
supports the FDOT Sheridan Street Widening Plan subject to the plan being modified such that
FDOT acquires entire parcels for those properties fronting Sheridan Street U.S. 1, and subject
further to the installation of additional landscape buffering between the reconstructed Sheridan
Street and adjacent residential neighborhoods.
Section 4. That the City Manager is directed to meet with the District IV Secretary of
the Florida Department of Transportation to discuss the above referenced matters.
Section 5. The City Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of the Resolution to
the Florida Department of Transportation and other interested governmental agencies.
Section 6. That this Resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption.
PASSED AND ADOPTED this 5th day of February, 2002.
