1 am very excited to inform you that due to continuous diligence on the part of
many employees, we were able to secure funding that was previously lost
through the LLEBG (Local Law Enforcement Block Grant).
In March of this year, we received a letter stating we had not filed financial
reports for the years 1996-1998 of our LLEBG grant and therefore would have to
return $81,819. After much research, both through our grant department and
finance department, we were able to obtain the financial records and compiled
the information for the Department of Justice. Our staff was able to satisfy all
requirements and therefore we do not have to return any of this money.
During the research process it was discovered that the 2001-2003 LLEBG grant
was never received. Many conversations with the Department of Justice, along
with e-mails, web site visits, etc. was conducted. According to the Department of
Justice rules, you have 90 days in which to accept your award. We were eligible
to accept ours in October, 2001. The award amount was $74,758. But, again
with due diligence, our staff was able to convince the Department of Justice to
release these funds. This money will be electronically transferred this month.
I want to personally thank all the city staff for taking the time and effort to not only
ensure that the City did not have to reimburse $81,819 but also to convince the
Department of Justice that we were entitled to the $74,758. This money will
continue to fund the Center for Success, Demolition of unsafe structures and
• provide equipment such as surveillance camera, video equipment, and enhanced
drug sting operations through BSO.
This once again proves that the employees of the City of Dania Beach are willing
to go that extra mile. Without this extensive research, we would have not only
had to pay $81,819 but would have also lost $74,758. 1 truly believe that the staff
we now have, working as a team, will enable the City to move forward in ways
we never would have thought of. Again, thank you.
