HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-2002-137 RESOLUTION NO. 2002-137 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA BEACH, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING CONGRESSMAN PETER DEUTSCH'S POSITION THAT THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION ("F.A.A.") INCLUDE THE LONG TERM ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF THE PROPOSED SOUTH RUNWAY EXPANSION AT THE FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ("FILL"); FURTHER, PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City of Dania Beach would like to extend its appreciation to Congressman Peter Deutsch for his May 13, 2002, letter sent to The Honorable Jane Garvey, Federal Aviation Administration, in Washington, D.C. impressing upon the FAA to provide the best available analysis of environmental and socio-economic impacts of the proposed South Runway expansion at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport; and WHEREAS, in the May 13th letter, Congressman Deutsch states his familiarity with the Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement (SDEIS) for FLL's South Runway expansion and factors involved in FAA's Record of Decision for airport expansions; and WHEREAS, Congressman Deutsch points out that the runway expansion is a long term capital improvement which will permanently affect the use of the airport and will impose surrounding local communities with environmental and economic impacts in the future; and WHEREAS, Congressman Deutsch impressed upon the FAA to use a 30-40 year planning horizon to analyze the potential for impacts in the current SDEIS, which f 1 RESOLUTION NO. 2002-137 only projects through 2015, a mere 7 years after the runway expansion is completed; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: Section 1. That the City of Dania Beach supports the position presented by Congressman Peter Deutsch to urge the FAA to fully assess the impacts of the proposed South Runway expansion by using an extended impact horizon — one that accounts for future airport development beyond 2015 and comprehensively examines unconstrained use of the South Runway. Section 2. That the City Commission of the City of Dania Beach extends its appreciation to Congressman Deutsch for his support of the local communities impacted by the South Runway expansion and his request that FAA fully understand all factors involved as they shape the future of Broward County. Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this Resolution to the Broward County Commission, U.S.EPA, U.S. Department of Interior, U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Federal Aviation ' Administration, the Governor of the State of Florida, State of Florida DEP, the South Florida Water Management District.
