RE: Resolution Concerning Cable Television Policy Statement
Attached please find a proposed Resolution pledging the City's support for the effort of
the City of Fort Lauderdale, Broward County and various municipalities to jointly
explore cable television service alternatives.
BACKGROUND
On June 29, 2001, the City of Fort Lauderdale hosted a Cable Television forum for all
Broward County municipalities to discuss the problems the cities and their citizens were
having with AT&T Broadband's cable service. Fort Lauderdale proposed that the cities
jointly explore cable service alternatives, such as cable television overbuilders and direct
broadcast satellite and consider working as a coalition to obtain better terms and services
from AT&T Broadband. The City of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County passed
resolutions pledging their support for this effort.
On July 19, 2001, the Broward League of Cities hosted a similar forum. The members
agreed to present the City of Fort Lauderdale and County's proposal to their respective
commissions.
The proposed City Resolution states the Commission's disapproval of AT&T.
Broadband's services and general support for the effort to work with other municipalities
on this issue.
