HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-2001-200 RESOLUTION NO. 2001-200 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA BEACH, FLORIDA OPPOSING THE PARADE OF PLANES EVENT SCHEDULED NOVEMBER 7, 2001, BY THE GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU; FURTHER, PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Dania Beach northern entrance is landscaped to give a positive appearance to our local neighborhoods and also serves as an entrance for the Broward County Airport in Dania Beach; and WHEREAS, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau, without notifying or considering the cities most directly affected, scheduled a "Parade of Planes" event in conjunction with the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) for November 7, 2001, which requires the removal of trees and landscaping at the entrance to Dania Beach and adjacent neighborhoods; and WHEREAS, the City of Dania Beach is the oldest City in Broward County and has contributed a major part of the airport properties that benefit Broward County tourism; and WHEREAS, this particular project should have been coordinated with the City of Dania Beach through timely notification with the goal of not disrupting the appearance of our neighborhoods, which has offended the residents throughout Broward County as being friviolous and implying that our quality of life is only subject to convenient financial consideration. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA BEACH, FLORIDA: Section 1. That the City Commission of the City of Dania Beach opposes the "Parade of Planes" event being held on November 7, 2001, as scheduled by the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau based on lack of consideration for 1 RESOLUTION NO. 2001-200 • residents of Dania Beach, improper communication and notification, and disregard for the community and environment. Section 2. That the City Commission of the City of Dania has further directed the city attorney to review the policy and legality of the event. Section 3. That this resolution shall be in force and take effect immediately upon its passage and adoption. PASSED and ADOPTED this 23`d day off October, 2001. Up to 10,000 are expected to travel to Greater Fort Lauderdale and will bring our destination an economic impact of approximately $7.5 - $10 million dollars. A PARADE OF PLANES TAKES TO THE STREETS ON NOVEMBER 7 For First Time on East Coast in 20 Years,Private Planes,Including Jets,Will Taxi to AOPA Expo 2001 at Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — October xx, 2001 — A visit to Greater Fort ® Lauderdale is just "plane"fun—never more so than this November, however. On November 7, 2001 at 10 am, residents and guests will delight to the sight of more than 50 private airplanes, including turboprops and jets taxiing down 17' Street on their way from the Fort Lauderdale;'Hollywood International Airport to the Greater Fort LauderdaleBroward Country Convention Center. The Parade of Planes, which has not been presented on the East Coast in 20 years, is the centerpiece of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association's Expo 2001 and provides spectators with the rare opportunity to view the latest aircrafts and aviation technology available. Following the parade, the planes will be on display at the Convention Center. Over 560 exhibits and special events are scheduled during the three-day conference, which is taking place from November 8-10, 2001. Passes for Expo 2001 are priced at$30 per person for access to the exhibits and $45 per person with the inclusion of seminars. Manufacturers will be on hand to show the latest airplanes (full size and models), plus there will be extensive technology displays, including the newest cockpit screens and navigation systems. Representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration will highlight the latest developments in private aviation. Over 90 hours of seminars are aimed at improving pilot skills. -more- j PLANE PARADE/2 The AOPA Expo 2001 is another example of the appeal of Greater Fort Lauderdale as a convention destination for a broad spectrum of companies, associations and interest groups.
