DANIA BEACH CITY COMMISSION
SPECIAL MEETING
NOVEMBER 1, 2000
1. CALL TO ORDER BY MAYOR MCEL YEA AT 8:35 A.M.
2. ROLL CALL
Present:
Mayor: Charles McElyea
Vice-Mayor: John Bertino
Commissioners: Jim Cali
Bob Mikes
City Attorney: Tom Ansbro
City Manager: Mike Smith

3. A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA
BEACH, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE CITY ATTORNEY TO INTERVENE
AS A PLAINTIFF IN A LAWSUIT BROUGHT BY THE CITY OF POMPANO
BEACH AND OTHER MUNICIPALITIES, SEEKING INJUNCTIVE RELIEF
AGAINST BOB CRAWFORD, IN HIS CAPACITYAS COMMISSIONER OF THE
FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE, REGARDING THE CITRUS
CANKER ERADICATION PROGRAM.
City Attorney Ansbro advised that the Citrus Canker program has been
suspended until November 9, 2000 and that the Department of Agriculture
has stated a desire to meet with various cities to offer the same relief that
was offered to Pinecrest and South Miami in their litigation.
Commissioner Mikes stated that there are many larger cities with bigger
legal budgets to pursue extensive research on programs like this,
however, the City must limit its legal involvement so as not to absorb
tremendous expense.
City Manager Smith advised that the Broward County Legislative
Delegation is holding a hearing November 2, 2000, at the City of
Hollywood City Hall at 6:00 p.m. to discuss the Citrus Canker program.
A motion was made by Commissioner Cali, seconded by Vice-Mayor
Bertino, adopting the resolution.

The motion passed on the following 4/0 roll call vote with Commissioner
Etling being absent:

Annexation:
City Manager Smith advised that there were two more brochures mailed
out today on the upcoming annexation and that there is a meeting tonight
with Twin Lakes Homeowners Association and another on Monday night
with Ravenswood Estates and Estates of Fort Lauderdale Mobil Home
Parks. The City will also have a booth at the St. Maurice Catholic Church
fair this weekend.
Commissioner Mikes expected the City of Hollywood to send out more
literature at the last moment that may need to be responded to by the City
and sent out to voters. He stressed the importance of having persons at
the polls to pass out literature and wear T-shirts supporting Dania Beach.
Commissioner Cali recommended that each of the City Commissioners
take a shift at each of the polls. City Manager Smith advised that the two
• polling places are Meli Park and the Estates of Fort Lauderdale
clubhouse.
Commissioner Mikes recommended that the Sun Sentinel endorsement
article be printed and mailed out to every voter in the four annexation
areas.
City Manager Smith advised that Jay Fields has passed out flyers, BSO
has distributed post cards, and the Fire Department has agreed to pass
out flyers and work the neighborhood areas supporting Dania Beach in the
annexation.
Vice-Mayor Bertino advised that Mara Giulianti, Mayor of Hollywood, will
be speaking at the Estates of Fort Lauderdale the night before the
election. City Manager Smith advised that the City is scheduled to speak
at 8:30 p.m. that night.
