HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-2000-072 RESOLUTION NO. 2000-072 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA BEACH, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING LEGISLATION CREATING A MARINE PROTECTED AREA IN WATERS OFF DANIA BEACH AND OTHER AREAS IN BROWARD COUNTY; DIRECTING THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE FLORIDA FISH AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION COMMISSION AND OTHER INTERESTED AGENCIES; PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, various conservation groups have or will be making requests to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to designate certain areas as marine reserves, marine protected areas wherein harvesting of marine organisms would be prohibited; and WHEREAS, one of the proposed reserves is off the coastline of Dania Beach, Florida; and WHEREAS, it is believed that a reserve would protect the coral reefs within the protected area and relieve fishing pressures on depleted fishing stock; and WHEREAS, creating such reserves may foster non-consumptive recreational opportunities such as snorkeling and diving; and WHEREAS, an increase in diver visitations to visit the reserve area would be expected and economically beneficial; and WHEREAS, such a reserve may be significant in protecting marine ecosystems in the waters off Broward County; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA BEACH, FLORIDA, AS FOLLOWS: 1 RESOLUTION NO. 2000-072 Section 1. The foregoing "Whereas" clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution upon adoption hereof. Section 2. That the City Commission of the City of Dania Beach hereby declares its support for the proposed legislation creating marine reserves, marine protected areas wherein harvesting of marine organisms would be prohibited, off the shores of Broward County, Florida. Section 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of the Resolution to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and to other interested governmental agencies. Section 4. The lobbyists for the City of Dania Beach are hereby directed to take necessary actions for the support of such legislation. Section 5. That this Resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED this 23rd day of May, 2000. C.K.
