Dear Friends: LOIS\\'EXLER
Our school system, like many others across the country, is responding to the
community's renewed interest in developing positive character traits in our
young people. After extensive public involvement, our School Board has
adopted eight character traits that will be infused throughout our curriculum
and student activities. The traits that we will emphasize are responsibility,
citizenship,kindness, respect,honesty, self-control, tolerance and cooperation.
In order for us to be effective in this effort, we, as a community, must join
together to support the ideals listed above. We hope that you and your
colleagues will help reinforce these traits with our young people. A copy of a
School Board resolution seeking your assistance in supporting this initiative is
attached.
There are many ways to promote character education. Your organization might
consider some of the following:
o Display the character logo in printed materials, web designs, public meeting
places, audiovisual presentations,;etc. (A copy of our logo is attached.)
• Incorporate the traits into your existing educational partnership activities with
schools.
• Consider developing new activities within this theme. Contact our Partnership
Office at 765-6970 for assistance.
• Consider one or more of the eight character traits as a theme for special events,
training programs, public speaking, awards, etc.
Many of your colleagues have public school students in their families. By
reinforcing this initiative within your organization, you will set an example of
how they can do the same within the home. Should you have an interest in
getting more involved in the character education initiative, please don't hesitate
to contact the Partnership Department at 765-6970 or the Student Support
Services/Exceptional Student Education Department at 768-8964.
Sincerely,
Frank Till
