WORKSHOP MEETING
DANIA CITY COMMISSION
AUGUST 25, 1975
1. Present:
Mayor: Robert Duncanson
Vice Mayor: John Bertino
Commissioners: John Kay
Robert Donly
City Manager: John Kooser
2. The first item on the agenda wee discussion of ways to cut the budget.
Before this took place the Mayor introduced the new City Manager, Mr.
John Kooser to the commission. Mr. Kooser expressed his pleasure on
being able to listen in on the discussion and get the feel of the
commissions ideas and in turn present his thoughts later on in the week.
The first area in which the budget was questioned concerned the money
spent for the Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Burdett, from the Chamber,
brought out the various ways in which the Chamber benefited the City.
However, this years budget, being rather tight, it was questioned
whether the money used for the Chamber was really necessary and it
was decided that money should rather be funded for special projects.
Mrs. Ely, felt the Chamber of Commerce was responsible for a great many
worthwhile projects and pointed out some of the activities in recent
months that the commission wasn't even aware of.
Mr. Sette, pleaded for the commission to pay as you go rather than
eliminate the Chamber of Commerce from the budget.
Various departments in Public Works were gone over to see where cuts
could be made)for example, part time workers in the Cemetery, employees
in the Water Department-especially accounting and billing departments
and the Plant Chemist operator all were thought to be possibilities.
The Assistant City Manager's position could be replaced with a person
with less responsibility and thus a smeller salary.
Pete Prosaic, proposed putting these people on a four day week rather than
putting them on unemployment. He also felt that rather than cars the
police patrol should get horsemen.
Morry Socket , a Dania resident, felt for the small amount it cost the taxpayer,
none of the men should be let go.
Bill Brook, suggested ways the city could save money on lot clearing and grass
cutting.
James Stevens, was questioned as to whether money could be cut in his area.
He answered that County agencies do not give the services they promise and
people both in Dania and outside the city get immediate help. It was brought
out that Dania is paying a small part of this, the largest part being
federally funded. It was felt this is a necessary and worthwhile project.
The suggestion was made that Mr. Stevens not up another site close to the
City Hall.
Insurance and Pension was discussed briefly and Mr. Kooser was asked to make
a study on this and give his thoughts at the next workshop meeting.
3. The commission was reminded that if they had any possibilities of members
for the DARCOM board especially an architect, to contact Mr. Littrell.
