MINUTES
DANIA CITY COMMISSION
WORKSHOP MEETING
JULY 17 , 1990

6:00 p.m. Tour of the area recently annexed to the City
of Dania. The City Commission, representatives of the j
area' s civic groups and press toured the area using the
City' s recreation van .

Upcoming referendum vote this fall regarding f
residentially zoned property joining the City.
Mr . Flatley welcomed comments from several_ civic group
representatives from the newly annexed area west of the
City.
Jay Field , President of C .A.R E. (Citizens Against
Runway Expansion) expressed appreciation to the
Commission for touring their area and allowing them to
speak at this meeting.
^]r . Field informed the Commission that residents in the j
1 newly annexed area would like to see Dania address the
i
following issues :
1 . the need for an immediate curfew on the south
runway at the airport and from the cross diagonal
runway 1331 ;
i
2 . the need for Dania to reaffirm i.ts opposition
to extending the south runway;
3 . the need to address the noise problem, due to
the removal of trees , along the north runway and
g diagonal runway;
4 , the need to address the construction of the
incinerator at. the Port ;
5 . the need for strict radar enforcement of 45 ' '
MPH speed limit on Griffin Road;
6 . the need for concern for residents on 27th
and 31st Avenue as these roads were added to the Q` 4
Broward County Trafficways Plan;
7 . the need for concern to prohibit trucks and
re-route traffic from using SW 30th Avenue with the °
importing of garbage by the County from Monroe County; w„t -ems

Mr. Field suggested two Possihilities for the !
referendum; to either hold a Primary Election on
September 1 or to hold a General Election on November i
6 . Mr. Field explained that the voter registration
would close August 6 for the Primary and October 8 for
the General . Mr . Field suggested the campaign for the
referendum on annexation be called "Dania Now" and that
Dania sl'roul.d emphasize the primary concern being
protection for residents from the airport expansion .
Mr. Fi-el.d stated that residents would like to see a tax
{ comparison between Dania and the County and mentioned
that Dania should inform new residents that is not more
expensive to live in Dania . Mr . Field stated that
1 residents should be aware that the commercial property
on Griffin Road has already been annexed and that
revenue from these businesses will not be used for the
residential neighborhoods unless they aro annexed, Mr.
Field also mentioned tile need to oppose the sludge
plant project .
Bunny Brahman , Vice President of CARE, expressed the
need to get to know the business people in the
annexation area prior to sanding out the;• notices for j
them to take onl their ocCUPational licenses for Dania .

City Manager Flatley mentioned that he felt it, would be
better to hold the referendum in November to allow more,
time for proper notification .

waS in fifth place and that Dania will be even lower
this year.

annexation resident!, have more to gain by volunteering
to come into the City for better reprrsentation on
major couflrcts like the airport expansion. J

Commissioner Bertino suggested having an additional
public hearing relating to the D. R . I . review on the
airport expansion at a location in the newly annexation
area .
Commissioner Cook commended Mayor McElyea for his idea

of touring the annexation area and expressed
appreciation to the residents from the annexation area
! for expressing their suggestions and encourage
d
continued involvement .
The Commission generally agreed to schedule events and
attend meetings in the annexation area to get better
acquainted with residents and businesses prior to
November .
City Manager Flatley encouraged residents in the
annexation area to become involved in the City
Commission Meetings that take place on the second and
fourth Tuesdays of each month .
This workshop meeting was then adjourned .
