Discussion concerning airport expansion. Mayor Byrd, noting the unusually large crowd attending this workshop, urged attendance at the November 2nd meeting to be held at 7: 00 p.m. at Hollywood Hills High School where the County will make the final decision on the airport expansion. Mayor Byrd asked for cooperation from the audience, reminding the citizens that they are on the same side of the question, the Commission having made the decision to oppose the �' expansion of the south runway when the plan first became knowledge. He read excerpts from past minutes describing the actions taken by the Commission since January in a constant and steady position of opposition to the airport expansion. Mayor Byrd expressed displeasure with the Airport Advisory Committee 's action regarding going public with its findings before reporting to the Commission as charged. He mentioned that the City hired and is paying a law firm and two special consultants to work with the Committee. Commissioner Bertino expressed pleasure at seeing so many neighbors from the West attending this meeting. Earl Gallop, Attorney, presented a summary of the expansion planning, funding and construction stages and the review processes that will take place. Citizens ' concerns regarding the protection of their property values were discussed. Mr. . Gallop explained how individual circumstances vary regarding the purchase assurance program and the cause of action situations. Frank Kreidler, Attorney representing the CARE (Communities Against Runway Expansion) organization, stated that those western communities share the concern of the citizens of Dania and the City Commission regarding the expansion of the south runway and stressed the importance of a positive attitude and a unified presentation against the expansion at the County Commission meeting on November 2nd. Mr. Kreidler- thanked the City Commission for engaging Mr. Gallop and the two consultants and said that the sharing of their reports has been of great service to the communities. r S Cliff Iacino, member of the Airport Advisory Committee, asked j for the city's resolve regarding the Committee's "What If" 1 report that was discarded by Mr. Godfrey about a month ago. Mr. Gallop explained that a "what if" approach may be inconsistent with a committed opposition to the runway expansion right now. i Workshop Meeting ]. October 21., 1987 A representative of CARE urged all concerned citizens to picket on October 26th and to telephone each County Commissioner to voice opposition to the airport expansion. Vice Mayor Cook stressed the importance of a united effort and a huge turnout at the November 2nd meeting. i Citizens were invited to register with the City Manager for 0 city transportation to the Hollywood Hills High School. At the recommendation of a citizen, City Manager Jewell was i directed to request the County to alternate the speakers for and against on their agenda. After a brief recess, Mayor Byrd recommended that agenda items 2 thru 6 be postponed. 2. Discussion concerning proposed changes in civil service rules. i 3. D.C. to extend its agreement with the City of Dania to develop a housing program for low to moderate income persons within the Dania target area.
