HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-1989-083 RESOLUTION NO. 83-89 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT BANNING THE DESECRATION OF THE AMERICAN FLAG; PROVIDING FOR COPIES ; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS , the flag of the United States of America , since the birth of this nation, has been the banner of our crusade which has brought us from various forms of servitude to a life of liberty and freedom all people of the world have , for countless ages , sought to obtain; and WHEREAS , much like the giant sequoias and redwoods which proudly stand as American treasures in the Sequoia National Park in east central California , our flag proudly flies over every city, town, village and hamlet in this great land as the symbol of the many freedoms which all Americans treasure and vigorously defend with the firm belief that our flag must be respected and protected regardless of the costs , in the same sense , but to a greater degree, than the giant sequoia and redwood trees; and WHEREAS , our flag , for which hundreds of thousands of i Americans have fought and died , must be honored , cherished and protected as the "crown jewell " of our nation , never to be trod upon or desecrated in any manner regardless of the reason; and WHEREAS, the City Commissioners of the City of Dania , Florida , individually and on behalf of all its citizens desire to express their strong opposition to the recent decision of the j United States Supreme Court upholding a person' s right to burn our flag as an act of political protest , and to support President Bush in his efforts to have enacted by the United States Congress and ratified by the several states , a constitutional amendment to ban the burning or otherwise desecrating the American flag . NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA: i i Section 1 . That the City Commissioners , individually and on behalf of the citizens of Dania , express their strong opposition to the recent decision of the United States Supreme Court which 83-89 Resolution No. 3 1 f I upheld a person' s right to burn the American flag as an act of i political protest, and support President Bush in his efforts to 1 have a constitutional amendment enacted to ban the burning or desecration of the American flag . Section 2 . That copies of this resolution shall be provided to President George Bush, members of the Florida Congressional Delegation and other public officials as directed by the city manager . Section 3 . That this resolution shall be in force and take effect immediately upon its passage and adoption . PASSED and ADOPTED on this 25th day of July 1989 .
