HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-1989-113 RESOLUTION NO. 113-89 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA, IN RECOGNITION OF CHESTER A. BYRD' S SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY AND TO EXPRESS APPRECIATION TO BETHUNE-COOKMAN COLLEGE, FOR HONORING THIS GREAT MAN DURING THE WEEK OF THE SOUTH FLORIDA CLASSIC . WHEREAS , CHESTER A. BYRD, a native of Panama City, Florida, spent almost all of his alloted time on earth serving his God and his fellowman with distinction and honor; and WHEREAS , CHESTER A. BYRD graduated from Rosenwald High School in Panama City, Florida , and after graduation attended Bethune- Cookman College where he met his beloved wife, Eugenia, and in addition , earned a Bachelor' s Degree in education . Fie then furthered his formal education by attending New York University and the University of Miami , Florida, where he earned a Master' s Degree ; and WHEREAS, as an educator he served many years as a teacher and as an assistant administrator in our public schools and as assistant to the president of the Universiy of Miami . In addition, he served as Director of Religious Education for Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church of Hallandale , Florida; and WHEREAS, in addition to his service as an educator, he was also very active in religious , civic, social and business nnanivafinnc cunh ac CZ F n.uarA nF W.rA A M R !`h.," member of the Board of Directors of Camp Blanding Child Care Center, as an active member of Broward County Black Coalition, Florida Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials , Broward County Caucus of Local Elected Officials , as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Council of Black Mayors and the Dania Democratic Club . In addition, he was a member of the Dania Chamber of Commerce and the founder of and Chairman of the Board of the Dania Economic Development Commission. Further, he served as a a City Commissioner of the City of Dania and was twice elected by a Resolution No. 113-89 J i +s, 1 1� r ' unanimous vote as Mayor of the City of Dania , the position he held at the time of his untimely death ; and Whereas , CHESTER A. BYRD made a special impact on the youth of our city as well as the State of Florida through services as an educator , religious leader and as an athlete . He was a quarterback on the Bethune-Cookman College football team and later was a basketball coach . He was a loyal booster and fan of the University of Miami Hurricanes and the Miami Dolphins football teams. As a teacher and as a coach , CHESTER BYRD used those opportunities to teach the young people whom he taught and coached the responsibilities of good citizenship and sportsmanship ; and WHEREAS, CHESTER A. BYRD loved his fellowman and likewise , was loved and respected by all people who were fortunate enough to have known him; and WHEREAS , CHESTER BYRD' S treatment and concern for all those with whom he came in contact exemplifies love in its truest sense , which was demonstrated time and time again throughout his life ; and WHEREAS , because of his good influence and deep concerns for the youth of our state , many young men and women have matured into successful and happy members of our society who have made substantial contributions to the wall-being of their fellowman ; y.. and WHEREAS, the City Commissioners of the City of Dania , individually and on behalf of all the citizens of Dania, desire to formally express their appreciation to Bethune-Cookman College for the recognizing tn1S outstanding C1CLZen dn c u puuli sere dill during South Florida Classic by holding the Chester A. Byrd Presidential Banquet in his honor. NOW, THEREFORE , BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA: Section 1 . That the City Commissioners of the City of Dania , i individually and on behalf of its citizens , hereby express their 3 J appreciation to Bethune-Cookman College for recognizing the 3 HONORABLE CHESTER A. BYRD, during the week of the South Florida ar a -2- s i Classic by holding the Chester A. Byrd Presidential Banquet in his honor. i Section 2 .
