HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-1991-053 RESCLUTION NO. 53-91 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE CITY COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF HOLLYWOOD IN THEIR ADOPTION OF RESOLUTION NO. R-91-56 ON MAY 1, 1991 , RELATING TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A SPRING TRAINING FACILITY IN THE CITY OF HOLLYWOOD FOR THE MONTREAL EXPOS BASEBALL TEAM; PROVIDING FOR DISTRIBUTION; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA: Section 1 . That the City Commission of the City of Dania, Florida, has reviewed the contents of Resolution No. R-91-56 as passed and adopted by the City of Hollywood, Florida, on May 1 , 1991 , a copy of which is + attached hereto as Exhibit "A" , and do hereby support said resolution and _ } the contents thereof, and, further, expresses its support of Hollywood ' s effort to establish a spring training facility in the City of Hollywood tifor the Montreal Expos Baseball team which should benefit all the residents of our area. 1, Section 2. That a copy of this resolution be furnished to each member of the Hollywood City Commission and to such other parties as may be directed by the city manager. Section 3. That this resolution shall be in force and take effect immediately upon its passage and adoption. PASSED and ADOPTED on this 14th day of May 1991 . A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF HOLLYWOOD, FLORIDA, RATIFYING THE COMMISSION'S PRIOR AUTHORIZATION GIVEN TO THE CITY ATTORNEY, INTERIM CITY MANAGER AND COMMISSIONER GUY ROPER TO CONTINUE TO PURSUE, EXPLORE, RESEARCH AND DIALOGUE WITH RESPECT TO THE POTENTIAL OPPORTUNITY OF ESTABLISHING A SPRING TRAINING FACILITY IN HOLLYWOOD FOR THE MONTREAL EXPOS BASEBALL TEAM AND TO MEET WITH OTHER GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND PRIVATE ENTITIES AND MONTREAL EXPOS' OFFICIALS IN CONNECTION WITH IDENTIFYING POTENTIAL GRANTS AND OTHER AV"LABLE FUNDING SOURCES FOR THE SPRING TRAINT. FACILITY AND TO KEEP THE CITY COMMISSION ? NFORMED ON THE PROGRESS OF THIS MATTER WHEREAS, the : L. iwood City Commission, at its April 17, I 1991 regular meeting, unanimously expressed an interest in exploring the potential opportunity of establishing a spring c training facility in Hollywood for the Montreal Expos Baseball I Team; and . ttt WHEREAS, Hollywood is a prime seasonal travel destination for many French Canadians from the Province of Quebec, as well as ja place where many French Canadians own a second home; and WHEREAS, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau has estimated that 202,000 French Canadians from ' the Province of Quebec visited Broward County last year, of which an estimated eighty percent came to Hollywood; and WHEREAS, representatives of. the Montreal Expos, aware of Hollywood's attraction to a number of the team's fans, are intrigued by the possibility of playing spring training games in • Hollywood where there would be a natural base of fan support; and WHEREAS, representatives of the Montreal Expos have toured the City in the company of City staff and have publicly EXHIBIT "A" n ' LJ r re-stated their interest in Hollywood; and WHEREAS, the Montreal Expos currently play their spring training games in West Palm Beach under a lease that expires in 1995 and, therefore, the team would be interested in pursuing discussions with the City of Hollywood for re-locating its spring training headquarters to Hollywood as of 1996; and WHEREAS, Broward County Commissioner and Broward Tourist Development Council Chairperson Nicki Grossman has pledged her support for this proposal, including lending her assistance to seek f1 .+; financing alternatives for and the County Commission's support of �y the purchase of a Possible site where the spring training facility and a potential regional park could be located and developed; and '? WHEREAS, the City Commission desires to ratify its prior official authorization to the I1 City Attorney, the Interim City Manager and Commissioner Guy Roper to continue nue to Pursue, explore, tesearch and dialogue with respect to the potential Op portunity of establishing a spring training facility for the Montreal Expos I Baseball Team in Hollywood; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF HOLLYWOOD, FLORIDA: That the City Attorney, the Interim City Manager and Commissioner Guy Roper are each hereby authorized to continue to pursue, dialogue, explore and research the establishment of a spring training facility for the Montreal Expos Baseball Team in Hollywood; including, but not limited to, meeting further with representatives of the Montreal Expos, pursuing the proposal in 2 4: discussions with other local governmental authorities and private entities, investigating grant and other creative financing opportunities, and investigating all possible sites for the location of the necessary facilities and to keep the City Commission fully informed on the progress of this mat er.
