Appointment, of commissioner to fill vacancy created by the suspension of Vice Mayor McElyea . r (A) Mayor Mikes suggested Lhat this meeting be conducted in a public f hearing formal to give the public and Commission an opportunity to Ii expren:: their views on this issue. He also called for action on appointing a vice mayor in order to go forward with this meeting. ( B) A motion was made by Commissioner Bertino, seconded by Commissioner Hyde to appoint Commissioner Bill Hyde, as Vice Mayor for this meeting f! She recommended Sterling Collins , Jean Conk and Bo Donly. i Commissioner Bertino Commissioner Bertino mentioned the many people who would be good candidates for this position and the unfortunate task before the Comm i:::- ion to choose only one person. Mr. Bertino expressed his rlisc:atisfact.ion with the manner in which the Governor suspended Vice Mayor `(cElyea before any proof of guilt based on this country' s law that a person is innocent until proven guilty. He then felt that Mr. McElyea should be given an opportunity to come forward and give his opinion on Who should fill this position . C.K . McElyea "= Charles McElyea expressed his desire to recommend Roxane Knight but did s, no t because of her employment with him. (D) At this time , Mayor Mikes opened the public hearing Tim McLood felt that. thc• person chosen should have experience running for office in an election and having horn scrutinized by thc: public or po;u;vsN prior Commission experience . - , Jay 1•'ield rec•ommendod William h'inkelholz be nominated based on his ,•xperiottce on the Dania Housing Authority. John Bruckner questioned whether" throwing out names by each Commissioner i :; the bolt procedure for establishing a candidate and whether there ; s .us)thor procedure available . Mayor Mikes advised Mr . Bruckner that the Conlrnl SS1011 is following the guidelinrrs of the City Charter and that he has allowed public comment which has never been allowed before. John Vollman :;uggested Robert "Bo" Donly as the best choice hased on his p,l:;t Commission oxporienc•e and the fact that he is not interested in running for public• office . Buleah Lair recommended Bo Donly. Albert Jones c,lmo forward to mention his interest in being appointed to fill the present vacancy on the Commission and his intentions to run in the election in 1993 . Vivian Warman questioned if the public will be allowed to comment again alter an appointment has been made by the Commission but not yet finalized. Mayor" Mikes stated that the public is being allowed to comment now and that he will not be able to reopen the public hearing i after each Commission motion . Judy [Isifer recommended Albert Jones as a candidate and commented on his community involvement . Kurt. Ely's first choice was Bo Donly and his second choice was Bill Winkelliolz . Evan Whitman recommended Albert Jones and June Silvernale. Mayor Mikes responded to Dave Ryke' s question that if a committee member is appointed to fill this vacancy that they would be removed as a board member and replaced by an alternate. Irving Warman expressed his dissati-sfaction with the action taken to suspend Vice Mayor McElyea and encouraged the Commission to reappoint Charles McElyea . A motion was made by Vice Mayor Hyde, seconded by Commissioner Bertino to adopt the resolution appointing Robert Donly. I'll(, motion passed on the following roll call vote: Commissioner Bertino-yes Commissioner Grace-yes Vice Mayor Hyde-}'es Mayor Mikes-Yes (F) City Attorney Adler administered the Oath of Office to Robert Donly and advised him to sign a written Oath in the City Clerk 's Office tomorrow morning . COMMISSION COMMENTS: n Commissioner Grace welcomed Commissioner Donly to the Commission . . Commissioner Hertino expressed appreciation to all those individuals who were interested in fillip the g position and for their efforts on behalf of the City. - 4m Vice Mayor Hyde mentioned his )appreciation for the positive public � r; support for him assuming the appointment as Vice Mayor and his desire to see Charles MrE]yea back on the Commission noon. � . Mayor Miken exprenned appreciation to the public for all of their input and stated his opinion that the Comminsion has strong representation with the appointment of Robert. Donly. Kurt. Ely encouraged participation in the "Lets Support Mac" rally being held at.
