L Lewis Gusdorff. (Comm. Benino)
Lewis Gusdorff reported on an incident that allegedly occurred with a staff member at the beach and read
his letter to City Manager Flat lecyy requesting that Tim Tapp, Recreation Director, be fired for making an
ethnic slur to him. Mr. Gusdodf commented on communication with Kristen Jones in regards to her
having the qualifications to assume the position as Recreation Director and her letter requesting Mr. !Y
Gusdorff refrain from involving her in these issues.
Commissioner Grace suggested that the persons being mentioned by Mr. Gusdorff should be in attendance
to represent themselves. City Manager Flatley advised that he directed these individuals not to be present
tonight.
Commissioner Bertino recommended to leave this issue in the hands of administration.
Vice Mayor Mikes recommended to have all of the parties go before the Human Relations Board so that a
recommendation can be brought back to the Commission. Commissioner Grace concurred.
1 On behalf of the Commission, Mayor Hyde directed the Chairman of the Human Relations Board to place
this issue on their next meeting. Commissioner Benino suggested that legal counsel be present for all those
individuals involved so that everyone's rights are not violated at this meeting.
2. City Manager Flatley mentioned the City's action in 1991 to stop drain water from entering the three
lakes at Meadowbrook Lakes along SE loth and I Ith Street. He advised that baffles were placed along SE
loth Street and that drainage pipes going into the lakes along SE 1 lth Street were closed.
Peggy Breeschoten and R. Ragus, Meadowbrook Ickes Phase 3, re orted on the salt water condition of each
lake and the need for the valve be opened so that fresh water can flow into the lakes.
Mr. Flatley reported that the City installed a steel baffle at SE 1 lth/5 Avenue at a cost of$900.00 and then
removed it for $500 as requested by the Condominium owners. Also, $2,900 was spent to install a baffle at
SE IOth and plug SE I Ith which is now being changged. Mr. Flatley recommended to meet with the '
Presidents of the Associations in order to obtain a final drainage plan.
Martin Gilbert, Vice President of Phase I, 201 SE I 1 Terrace, recommended to have the proper engineers
present to give their recommendation on the drainage plan so that a final decision can be made.
Commissioner Benino mentioned that all three lakes are interconnected with piping underground and are
all going to be impacted by the other lake. Discussion followed on algae buildup m the lakes that can be
chemically treated and the need for fresh water into the lakes for to keep them clean.
Mr. Flatley confirmed that all three drains on SE loth Street are open and water is coming in from the
streets on 10th. The baffles drop pollutants into the water but they do not restrict fresh water from going
into the lakes. r
It was decided to have Mr. Flatley schedule a workshop meeting with Don Windham, Berry & Calvin, so
j that a final recommendation can be obtained Vice Mayor Mikes asked that each phase sign off on their :t '
final decision before it is brought before the Commis ion for approval.
