HomeMy WebLinkAboutNULL (549) k t , " MINUTES DANIA CITY COMMISSION ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING MARCH 16, 1993 THIS MEETING WAS CALLED TO ORDER BY VICE MAYOR MIKES AMERICAN LEGION POSTS 209 AND 304 PRESENTED THE POSTING OF COLORS FOR THE UNITED STATES FLAG INVOCATION BY REVEREND LEWIS I PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE ROLL CALL: . Present: Vice Mayor: Bob Mikes f ` Commissioners: John Bertino t Bill Hyde Bobbie Grace City Manager: Robert Flatley City Attorney: Frank Adler City Clerk: Wanda Mullikin Absent: Mayor: C.K. McElyea Introduction of New Commissioners City Attorney Adler presented the Oaths for the new Commission Candidates: Bob Mikes, Bobbie Grace and Albert Jones. He advised that with the recent Charter amendment the highest vote getter will become Mayor and the next highest vote getter will become Vice a Mayor. The election results designated Bobbie Grace as Mayor and Bob Mikes as Vice Mayor. Mayor Grace requested a resolution be prepared stating that the City of Dania, the Commissioners and City Employees appreciate all of the outstanding work that Mayor McElyea has done for the City of Dania during his years of service and that a resolution be r:' prepared commending Mary Jo Terminello for being awarded Teacher of the Year in Broward :j County. ; .. v �.-:� �/ [, !^ 1 �•. w: t ~ .:.k.. F,.....'`x 1.V.':'v`Y��` ^'1 > ... .. r Mayor Grace expressed appreciation to those individuals who were responsible for assisting in placing the two charter questions on the ballot for this election which gave the voters the opportunity to make the decision on the two issues. She then commended the American Legion Post 209 and 304 for their presentation. Responses: Commissioner Bertino welcomed Albert Jones as the newest member to the Commission and �+ mentioned his desire to work with the Commission on behalf of the City of Dania. Commissioner Hyde congratulated Mayor Grace and Vice Mayor Mikes along with new Commissioner, Albert Jones. Commissioner Jones expressed his appreciation for being given the opportunity to serve Dania and to all of those who assisted him in this election. Commissioner Jones remembered past Commissioner Boisey Waiters and Mayor Chester Byrd for being the first African Americans on the Dania Commission and acknowledged that Mayor Grace is now the first black female Mayor of Dania. Comments were expressed on his hopes for Dania over the next four years. Vice Mayor Mikes mentioned that Dania's financial position was not good four years ago and that efforts have been made to bring Dania into a more stable financial position. He expressed his appreciation to all of those individuals who have shown their confidence in him in this 1 election and his desire to continue to try to better the quality of life in Dania. Mayor Grace reported that this will be the last four year term for her and felt that a Town Hall Meeting should be conducted every two months so that citizens can express their views on issues that affect Dania. Mayor Grace mentioned the sacrifices that have been made by her husband and family members during this election and introduced them to the audience. Appreciation was then expressed to a number of individuals responsible for her success in this election. Former Commissioner Jean Cook was also commended for her support. Announcements by Mayor Grace Mayor Grace extended a special appreciation to Hollywood Commissioner, Ken Gottlieb. Vice Mayor Mikes expressed appreciation to and introduced his mother at this time. Commissioner Jones introduced his mother Mildred Jones, close family members and friends, numerous individuals, and members of St. Ruth's Baptist Church for their support in his election. f . A s Kati_ Mayor Grace recommended to have Commissioner Bill Hyde represent Dania in Tallahassee to oppose House Bill 1035. City Manager Flatley mentioned that the grant that Hollywood received for 1.5 million dollars to build a road in Dania is under review in Tallahassee and that representatives from Hollywood and Dania are being requested to meet over the neat few days in Tallahassee. Fie advised that Commissioner Hyde will be in New Orleans during this time but may be able to attend the meeting in Tallahassee. City Manager Flatley mentioned i the need for Ft. Lauderdale and Dania to meet with County Administrator, B.Jack Osterholt, r over the next few days and recommended to have City Attorney Adler and one of the Commissioners at this meeting. Mayor Grace requested Vice Mayor Mikes to attend on behalf of the Commission and he agreed.
