Interviews of the six (6) candidates, selected at the Commission Workshop s Meeting on August 5, 1995. Mayor Hyde explained that Vice Mayor Bertino, through Acting City Manager Smith, requested to have the first two interviews video taped for him. The Commission had no objection to the request. R. L. Black, ICMA, introduced the candidates and each candidate was interviewed in the following order: 7:00 p.m. - William Brady J 7:30 p.m. - Anna Ward 3 8:00 p.m. - Michael Smith (Currently employed as Dania Personnel Director) 8:30 p.m. - Ronald McLemore 9:00 p.m. - Sylvester Jackson 9:30 p.m. - Raymond Cox Each candidate provided a brief background on their experience and education in government and then responded to specific questions from the Commission. Mr. Black recommended to continue action on the interviews until September 19 and to only request references on the final three candidates. The Commission agreed that each candidate would be requested to fax their references to City Hall. A motion was made by Commissioner Jones, seconded by Vice Mayor Bertino to continue the selection of three candidates for City Manager to a Special Meeting on September 19, 1995, at 7:30 p.m. The motion passed unanimously. Black SUBJECT: City Manager Interviews At the Workshop Meeting of September 5, 1995, the individual preferences of Commission Members were tallied and the top six (6) candidates identified and/or selected for interview on September 14, 1995. - I , The following schedule.for interviewing those candidates is recommended: `r NAME TIME QE INTERVIEW William Brady 7:00 P.M. Anna Ward 7:30 P.M. Ronald McLemore 8:00 P.M. Sylvester Jackson 8:30 P.M. Raymond Cox 9:00 P.M. Michael Smith 9:30 P.M. The following suggestions/recommendations are made relative to the interview ! " schedule and format: j 7 r 1. Mayor and Commission Members start interviews promptly at 7:00 P.M. 2. Limit interviews to thirty (30) minutes each. 3. It is recommended that the Mayor open each interview with the introduction of Commission Members and then begin the interview process, with questions asked in orderly fashion by Commission Members. Every effort should be made to ask the same questions of each candidate, however, the tone and direction of the interviews usually evolve out of the chemistry which develops between Commission Members and each particular candidate. 5. Conduct the interview on a business-like basis, but relaxed enough to develop a rapport with the candidates enabling them to do their best. 6. Keep notes on each candidate if it can be done without affecting your focus on the candidate. Describe your background and experience. 2. How does your experience qualify you for this position? r, 3. How would you describe your management style? 4. How do you view the relationship between the administrator and governing body? How do you view your relationship with department heads and local government staff? 5. What will your first steps be upon assuming responsibility for this position? What do you hope to accomplish in the first year? 6. Describe your experience in budget preparation and finance. 1 7. Describe your experience in personnel and labor relations. 8. What are your strengths and weaknesses? 9. Why are you interested in this position? 10. How will you go about assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the e2( ' organization and identifying opportunities to improve? 11. What is important to you in establishing effective working relations with others. 12. How do you approach the planning process? What system do you use to set objectives and priorities? 13. What techniques have you found to be most successful in assisting local government officials establish and implement long and short range goals for the community? 14.
