PROJECT DESCRIPTION: 40 The City of Dania has no funding for law enforcement on the Dania Cut-off Canal and its associated waterways. Over the years many complaints have been received from business, "a+ • residents and boaters themselves of violations of posted speed signs and alcohol related abuses within the waterway system. The five (5) miles of the Dania Cut-off Canal is patrolled sporadicly by the Broward County Sheriffs Office and the Florida Marine Patrol. The patrolling that is ev •`' provided is not sufficient to police the waterways. Therefor the City of Dania is requesting your r assistance in providing for enhanced law enforcement along the Dania Cut-off Canal 71 ` The City plans to contract witt. the Broward County Sheriffs Office, which provides for law ks, r enforcement in the city, to provide the city with Marine Patrol Officers and Boats. y During the months of June - September 1995 the Broward County Sheriffs Office would provide for a fully trained Marine Patrol Officer and boat during the hours of 9 am. to 5 p.m. (8 hrs. per rt v' day) on weekend and holidays. During the months of November through April 1995 and 1996 we would be providing marine officers and boats on a twelve (12) hour per day basis on weekendsand ` " . the weedays, This would insure that our waterways are patrolled during the peak boating days ofk. ;x ij Since we would be using the Broward County Sheriffs Office for this service they would be able to .J ,Y t x . assist any jurisdiction in Broward County without regard to jurisdictional boundaries. In addition the City, with the assistance of the Broward County Sheriffs Office would be setting up a Canal Crime Watch Program for the Dania Cut-off Canal. This program would utilize „ personnel associated with five (5) business located along the various reaches of the canal on the a Y , t, weekends and holiday to be the second set of eyes to assist the marine patrol officer in the r identification of vessels who exceed the posted speed limits or may be intoxicated and to radio the r< they will be on the lookout for source's of pollution and Boating hazards to navigation. marine patrol officer with identification of the violator for quick responce by the officer. In addition All Canal Watch Personnel will be provide with ten (10) hours of initial training and orientation by % ' y tx wfr; the Broward County Sheriffs Office and will be issued hand held VHF Marine Radios for communications with the Marine patrol Officers. Each month for two hours they will meet with the y' marine patrol for continuing education and problem solving. y. Signs will be posted along the Dania Cut-off Canal similar to the Neighborhood Crime Watch signs I t informing boaters of the Canal Watch. To protect the identity of those involved in the program and so the boaters will not readily know their location along the canal no public information will be t ;sty r$ fi made available and the location will be periodically changed along with personnel, r " tr ' TOTAL PROJECT GRANT COSTS REQUESTED f_ rtit`fxr >p,47a 3 4, 1 , 1 .. .✓ x / .•r ..r .x:, •- ,, ;. ., ... .•.. ... 7!'"hn+fhY ,'..St'-• rvr 3 Yr:'. + St r" • F: ,# 2.
