RESOLUTION NO. 78-98
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA,
FLORIDA, URGING THE HONORABLE LAWTON CHILES, GOVERNOR OF
THE STATE OF FLORIDA, TO ALLOW CURRENT FLORIDA LEGISLATION
KNOWN AS "CS/HB3663", PERTAINING TO THE JAI ALAI INDUSTRY, TO
BECOME LAW; PROVIDING THAT ALL RESOLUTIONS OR PARTS OF
RESOLUTIONS IN CONFLICT ARE REPEALED TO THE EXTENT OF
SUCH CONFLICT; FURTHER, PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

WHEREAS, on May 4, 1998, the Mayor of the City of Dania, Florida, received a
written notice as required to be issued under federal law from the operator of Dania Jai
Alai, reporting that the closing of the business was imminent if the jai alai industry was not
supported by the benefits of legislation contained in Florida CS/HB3663; and
WHEREAS, CS/HB3663 is currently pending before the Governor and will become
j law if it is not vetoed by the Honorable Lawton Chiles; and
WHEREAS, the Florida Legislature, in a remarkable show of support for such
legislation, passed CS/HB3663 by an overwhelming vote of one hundred thirteen to one
(113-1) in the Florida House of Representatives and thirty-four to three (34-3) in the Florida
Senate; and
WHEREAS, Dania Jai Alai has become a fixture in the community of Dania, and has
operated here for forty-five (45) years; and
WHEREAS, the Dania Jai Alai operation contributes approximately $40 million
annually to the local economy and employs three hundred eighty-eight (388) persons from
the City of Dania and the surrounding community; and
WHEREAS, Dania Jai Alai is an internationally known and recognized tourist
attraction, as well as a significant employer in the community, the loss of which would
result in serious, significant and incalculable impacts to the City of Dania, its business
community and its inhabitants in general;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA:

'1 Section 1. That the City Commission of the City of Dania, Florida urges the
Honorable Lawton Chiles, Governor of the State of Florida, to allow current Florida
If legislation known as CS/HB3663, pertaining to the jai alai industry, to become law without
any adverse action by the Office of the Governor.
Section 2. That the City Clerk is directed to furnish certified copies of this
Resolution to the Honorable Governor of Florida, Lawton Chiles, to the Honorable Lt.
Governor, Buddy McKay, and to each of the members of the Broward County Legislative
Delegation.
Section 3. That this resolution shall be in force and take effect immediately upon
its passage and adoption.
