HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-1998-058 RESOLUTION NO. 58-98 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR THE PRESERVATION 2000 AND FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF "FOREVER FLORIDA" AS SUCCESSOR TO PRESERVATION 2000; PROVIDING AUTHORIZATION AND DIRECTION TO THE CITY CLERK TO TRANSMIT A CERTIFIED COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO THE BROWARD COUNTY LEGISLATIVE DELEGATION, THE CITY COMMISSION OF EACH CITY IN BROWARD COUNTY, THE FLORIDA LEAGUE OF CITIES; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY; FURTHER, PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Preservation 2000 is the State of Florida's premier land preservation program designed to acquire endangered lands critical for the protection of Florida's economy, the Everglades and land and water resources; and WHEREAS, the quantity and quality of our drinking water depends upon functioning ecosystems, including wetlands, which serve as critical recharge areas; and WHEREAS, Preservation 2000 provides for the acquisition of wetlands important for flood protection, and i WHEREAS, lands acquired through Preservation 2000 in Broward County for the Everglades Water Preserve will help to further the mutual interests of the residents and citizens of the State of Florida, Broward County and the City of Pembroke Pines, Florida for proper water management and storage, for improvement of water quality, and restoration of the Everglades; and WHEREAS, in anticipation of the expiration of Preservation 2000 in the year 2000, a successor program to be known as 'Forever Florida' has been proposed as a new land conservation program to succeed Preservation 2000; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE }� CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA; 1 RESOLUTION NO. 58-98 1 Section 1. The foregoing 'WHEREAS' clauses are hereby ratified and confirmed as being true and correct and are hereby made a specific part of this Resolution. Section 2. That the City of Dania, Florida supports the continuation of Preservation 2000 and its funding. Section 3. That the City supports the creation of 'Forever Florida,' a new land conservation program to succeed Preservation 2000, and its platform to amend the constitution consisting of four (4) proposals as follows: a) The first proposal would remove the limitation on bonds for conservation lands acquisition. b) The second proposal would authorize the legislature to create a tax exemption for privately held conservation lands. c) The third proposal would create a Land and Water Conservation Fund to be used for acquisition, management, and restoration of environmental lands. d) The fourth proposal would preserve conservation lands in perpetuity. Section 4. That the City Clerk is hereby directed to forward certified copies of this Resolution to the members of the Broward County Legislative Delegation, the City Commissions of each municipality in Broward County, the Broward County League of Cities and the Florida League of Cities. Section 5. All resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict herewith be and the same are hereby repealed to the extent of such conflict. Section 6. If any clause, section, other part or application of this Resolution is held by any court of competent jurisdiction to be unconstitutional or invalid, in part or application, it shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions or applications of this Resolution. 2 RESOLUTION NO. 68-98 I I Section 7.
