HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-1998-036 RESOLUTION NO. 36-98 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA SUPPORTING LOCAL AND STATE EFFORTS TO IMPLEMENT SAND BYPASSING AT PORT EVERGLADES INLET; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection estimates that more than 300 miles of Florida's beaches are experiencing a state of critical erosion, including 21 miles of Broward County's 24 miles of beach; and, WHEREAS, it is estimated that 85% of the beach erosion along Florida's East Coast is caused by the presence of stabilized inlets; and WHEREAS, studies have determined that the presence of Port i Everglades Inlet has resulted in an average annual sand deficit of 88,000 to 103,000 cubic yards per year along the eight miles of beach south of the Inlet; and WHEREAS, beaches are critical to Broward County, contributing and generating $600 million annually to the County's economy, creating 18,000 jobs, and adding $1.4 billion to property values; and WHEREAS, Broward County's beaches protect over$4 billion in upland coastal property against hurricane and storm waves, and healthy beaches can reduce damages to coastal development by as much as 50%; and WHEREAS, as a result of the County's beaches, local government tax revenues are increased by $30 million annually, of which the largest beneficiary is the Broward School District, which collects about $10 million in beach-generated taxes annually; and WHEREAS, the increasing cost of beach nourishment has mandated that more cost-effective ways be found to maintain the County's beaches; and WHEREAS, implementing sand bypassing at Port Everglades will reduce erosion, reduce expenditures for beach nourishment, and 1 RESOLUTION NO, 36-98 significantly improve the prospects for sustainable, healthy beaches in Broward County, NOW, THEREFORE, BE 1T RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA: Section 1. The City of Dania supports the efforts of local governments and the State of Florida to design, construct, and operate an efficient and effective sand bypass system at Port Everglades Inlet by supporting HB 3427 as introduced. Section 2. That this resolution shall be in force and take effect immediately upon its passage and adoption. PASSED AND ADOPTED THIS 10T" DAY OF MARCH 1998.
