RESOLUTION NO. 04-97
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA URGING THE
UNITED STATES CONGRESS TO APPROPRIATE $17 MILLION IN
FY 1998 FUNDS FOR THE BROWARD COUNTY BEACH
NOURISHMENT PROJECT; AND PROVIDING FOR AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, beaches are the leading tourist destination in the Nation, with
85% of all tourist spending occurring in coastal states, and with $80 billion
annually generated from foreign tourists alone; and,

WHEREAS, travel and tourism is the largest industry in the U.S. and the
world, the largest employer in the U. S., accounts for the greatest job
growth in the U. S., is the leading component of a growing service-
industry international trade surplus for the U.S., and is an industry in
which the U.S. dominates world-wide in revenues and profits; and,

WHEREAS, the success of Florida's tourist industry is integral to the
success of the U.S. travel and tourism industry; and,
WHEREAS, beaches are the most important factor influencing tourists to
visit Florida; and,

WHEREAS, the 21.6 million tourists who visit Florida's beaches directly
spend $7.9 billion, create 359,000 jobs, and generate $15.4 billion for
1 Florida's economy: and,
WHEREAS, seven million foreign tourists visit Florida each year, with 2.3
million from Canada, who stay an average of 21 days each and spend $1.
6 billion annually; and,

WHEREAS. beaches are Broward County's number one tourist attraction
and generate for the County over$1 billion in economic impact annually
and 25,000 full-time equivalent jobs; and,
WHEREAS, chronic erosion and recent severe storms have eroded the
City of Dania's beach such that the City's tourism economy is threatened
and upland properties and infrastructure are increasingly vulnerable to
storm wave and flood damage; and
WHEREAS, Section 227 of the water Resources Development Act of
1996 (Public Law 104-303) reaffirms the value of the Nation's beaches
and mandates continued federal participation in shore protection and
beach nourishment, and Section 506 of the Act directs the Secretary of
the Army to carry out beach nourishment in Broward County;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF DANIA, FLORIDA;
Section 1. The Commissioners of the City of Dania strongly urge
the United States Congress to appropriate$17 million in FY 1998 funds
for the federal share of the Broward County Beach Nourishment Project.
Section 2. The City of Dania authorizes and directs copies of this
resolution to be sent to Florida's United States Senators and to Broward
County's United States Representatives.
Section 3. That this resolution shall be in force and take effect
immediately upon its passage and adoption.
