MINUTES
DANIA CITY COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING
FEBRUARY 24, 1981
Invocation: Reverend Milton Jones
Pledge of Allegiance.

A motion was made by Commissioner Donly, seconded by Commissioner Cook to excuse
Commissioner Hirsch from this meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
The F.O.P. presented awards for outstanding performance to Sergeant Venezio and
Officer Schauwecker.
1. A motion was made by Commissioner Donly, seconded by Commissioner Cook to approve
the minutes of the regular meeting of February 11, 1981. The motion passed
unanimously.
2. Public Hearings:
a) Mayor Adams opened the public hearing on a variance request by Marine
Conversions, Inc. to allow a directional sign larger than 50 square feet at
the northeast corner of the intersection of North Federal Highway and
Northeast Second Street. The Planning and Zoning Board recommended denial
of this request.
Mr. Tom Baily, representing Marine Conversions, stated that they would meet
the 50 square foot requirement and that they would limit the sign for two
years.
After the public hearing, a motion was made by Commissioner Bertino, seconded
by Commissioner Donly to accept this variance for directional sign for two
years, as it will meet the 50 square foot requirement, it will be landscaped
according to the plan which will be submitted to the City and the landscaping
will be maintained. The motion passed on the following roll call vote:.
Commissioner Bertino - yes Commissioner Donly - yes
Commissioner Cook - yes Mayor Adams - yes
3. Discussion and possible action on variance request by Virginia Birchfield to allow
tire sales and service at 501 Stirling Road.
A motion was made by Commissioner Cook, seconded by Commissioner Donly to deny
this Variance request. The motion passed with Mayor Adams voting no.
4. A motion was made by Commissioner Bertino, seconded by Commissioner Donly to
close the time for accepting bids for the furnishing and installation of materials
to repair a bridge located on NW 14th Avenue, Engineer's Project #80-180, and
that the City Manager open the bids. The motion passed unanimously.
City Manager Marant opened the bids and they were read aloud as follows:
Hancock Marine and Construction Co. , Inc. - $38,972.00
Webb General Contracting Inc. - $21,650.00
A motion was made by Commissioner Bertino, seconded by Commissioner Cook to
turn the bids over to the City Manager for his tabulation and recommendation
at the next meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
5. A motion was made by Commissioner Bertino, seconded by Commissioner Donly to
close the time for accepting bids for the furnishing of labor, materials, and
equipment to install drainage and reconstruct and pave various streets within
the City, Engineer's Project N80-234, and that the City Manager open the bids.
City Manager Marant opened the bids and they were read aloud as follows:
Triple R Paving - $34,041.00
D.L. Granda Construction, Inc. - $34,520.75
L.C. Menefee, Inc. - $45,315.50
Broward Construction - $32,545.00
A motion was made by Commissioner Cook, seconded by Commissioner Bertino to
turn the bids over to the City Manager for his tabulation and recommendation
at the next meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
6. A motion was made by Commissioner Cook, seconded by Commissioner Donly to
pursue the annexation of parcel of property in Houston Park in order to abide
by our commitment to Marine Conversions and that we send a letter of thanks
and gratitude to the governmental bodies such as the Broward Delegation and
specifically Hollywood thanking them for their cooperation. The motion passed
unanimously.
7. A motion was made by Commissioner Bertino, seconded by Commissioner Cook to
adopt a resolution authorizing the purchase of a polygraph unit for the Police
Department in the amount of $2,509.95 and to commend the Police Department and
Administration for taking advantage of educational funds provided by the State.
The motion passed unanimously.
8. City Attorney Adler read the title of an ordinance authorizing the transfer of
Special Assessment funds to the General Fund.
A motion was made by Commissioner Bertino, seconded by Commissioner Donly to
adopt this ordinance on first reading. The motion passed on the following
roll call vote:
Commissioner Bertino - yes Commissioner Donly - yes
Commissioner Cook - yes Mayor Adams - yes
9. A motion was made by Commissioner Donly, seconded by Commissioner Bertino to
approve the bills as paid for the month of January, 1981. The motion passed '
unanimously.
10. There were no citizens' comments.
ADDENDUM
City Manager Marant requested that a workshop be set .up to discuss the Lease
Agreement for Dania Pier so that he could get some direction from the Commis-
sion on the condition of the lease. The Commission agreed.
11. City Manager Marant reported that an Administrative Public Hearing was held on
the Federal Revenue Sharing budget.
12. Vice-Mayor Bertino recommended the possibility of a vida course on the Church
of Resurrection's vacant property on NE Second Street. .
Commissioner Cook reported that a possible grant could be obtained for this
vida course. Commissioner Cook also stated that the Miami Herald showed that
Dania was one of two cities in Broward County to show growth in the last two

months and the rest showed results of recession and showed less stability,
meaning additional tax dollars and business stability to our City.
