DANIA CITY COMMISSION
WORKSHOP MEETING
MAY 25, 1983
ROLL CALL:
Present:
Mayor: Chester A. Byrd
Vice-Mayor: John Bertino
Commissioners: Jean Cook
James Adams
Robert Donly
City Attorney: Frank Adler
City Manager: Richard Marant
Deputy City Clerk: Mary Jabalee
The meeting was called to order and Mayor Byrd explained
the format of the meeting stating that the Broward County
Planning Council authorized the Commission to view the
Broward County Planning Staff' s proposals and make a
recommendation on the route of A-1-A.
The meeting was then continued while the Commission and
Planning Council Staff toured the alternate routes by bus.
1. Discussion of A-1-A corridor:
Also present at this meeting were members of the Broward
County Planning Staff, Broward County Commissioner Nikki
Grossman, Father O'Connor of the Church of the Resurrection;
a representative of Dania Jai Alai, a--group from the Danian
Condominiums and many concerned citizens.
Nancy Bright stepped forward and outlined the five alternative
routes encompassing nine corridors that the Broward County
Planning Council is considering for the A-1-A corridor and
announced that the Planning Council is leaning toward #5B.
Mr. Ryan, an attorney representing The Church of the Resurrec-
tion and the Archdiocese of Miami, expressed rebuttal to the
alternative proposals and suggested that the City request
the Planning Council to direct their county agencies to make
further cost studies.
Commissioner Donly paid tribute to Nikki -Grossman' s interest
and participation in this workshop meeting.
After a question and answer period during which Nikki Grossman
and Nancy Bright participated, Commissioner Grossman stated
that she thought the Broward County Commission' s current
position is one of concern for the property of the Church
and the property of the City of Dania where residents are
presently living and that an acceptable alternative is necessary.
She went on to say that a study should be made of the possibil-
ity of an elevated roadway through the West Lake corridor
before any decision is made to acquire properties.
The consensus of opinion on the part of the City Commissioners
was that alternative A, the five alternatives of B, and
alternative C are all unacceptable because of their damaging
impact on society and that alternatives D or E, upon closer
investigation, might prove to have a much lesser impact on
the environment with negligible ecological damage.
