Byrd Vice-Mayor: John Bertino Commissioners: Jean Cook James Adams Robert Donly City Attorney: Frank Adler City Manager: Richard Marant City Clerk: Wanda Mullikin Building Official : Paul Maxwell Mayor Byrd called the meeting to order. He stated that the Broward County Planning Council Staff's proposed corridor plan was unacceptable and that several Agencies had been invited to attend this Workshop Meeting. Discussion of A-1-A Corridor Nancy Bright presented an update of the activities of the Broward County Planning Council Staff and stated that of the five alternate routes encompassing nine corridors, B5 was the recommended corridor route. She described the D.O.T. and Broward County's trafficways plan. Mr. A. J. Ryan, Attorney representing The Church of the Resur- rection described the Church's position as being in opposition to constructing the road anyplace in the Northeast section of Dania. He suggested that if Federal funds are restricted from use for roads that go through park property, then the boundaries of the Park should be changed in order to use the environmentally sensitive Eastern area rather than ruining the populated North- east section of Dania with a one or two mile road through the community which, in the Church's opinion, is not the solution to the trafficways problem. A representative of the Department of Environmental Regulation stepped forward and described the environmental importance of the West Lake area and the Department's responsibility to citizens to protect the Park lands. He said that the Department was asked to view the two easternmost alternatives and give an opinion as to the permitability of the alternatives. His informal opinion is that the Department of Environmental Regulation is opposed to construction in that easternmost area due to loss of wild-life habitat, water quality impacts due to storm water, air pollution, noise and aesthetic intrusions into what is supposed to be a passive and natural area. A concerned citizen took exception to the statement about noise and air pollution affecting mangroves and questioned what Department would speak in defense of the citizens who live in the present proposed road construction area. Father O'Connor stated that the Archdiocese of Miami related that its position is the same as that of the Church of the Resurrection and that it is opposed to any road passing through the property of the Church of the Resurrection. i Workshop Meeting -1- September 12, 1983 f Each of the Commissioners voiced opposition to the construction of any road in the Northeast Dania area. Mayor Byrd announced that the City of Hollywood will join Dania in its opposition to this proposed road at the Broward County Planning Council public hearing on September 22, 1983, at 2:00 p.m. in room 250 of the County Courthouse. A motion was made and seconded to adjourn. The motion passed unanimously. s' a {.
