HomeMy WebLinkAbout86156 - MINUTES - City Commission MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING, CITY COMMISSION, CITY OF DANIA,
FLORIDA, HELD DECEMBER 22, 1964.
The City Commission of the City of Dania, Florida, met in
Special Session in the Commission Room at the City Hall.
Present were: MAYOR-COMMISSIONER FRANK SALVINO
COMMISSIONERS ROBERT GRAMMER
VERA L. HILT,
S. ELLIS YOUNG
CARL ZENOBIA
CITY ATTORNEY CLARKE WALDEN
CHIEF OF POLICE MONTIE SMITH
CITY CLERK MARY THORNHILL
The meeting was called to order at 4:30 P.M. by Mayor Salvino.
The purpose of the meeting is to discuss disposal of garbage
and trash.
Commissioner Zenobia: This morning the Mayor asked Bob Grammer
and I if we would doa little checking around to find out where
we could get rid of the trash, and we went out and checked with'
Curcie Brothers. The pit that they have on Hollywood Boulevard
is 17.2 miles. It took about 35 minOtes to get out there. They
have a pit where they dump trash and garbage, and the cities of
' Hallandale, Miramar and Pembroke Pines all ugse this ppit. They--
would contract with us on a year to year basis for $100 per month
per truck, as many loads as you want. They have a permit for
j their pit and they keep a pretty nice operation. These other
cities are using it now. I think it will be a solution to our
. problem. . We could either use it on a monthly basis or on a day
to day basis at $5.00 per load. I think it would be much cheaper
to pay $100 per month than to go on a load to load basis.
Commissioner Hill: Is that the only proposal we have?
Acting City Manager Thornhill: I called Mr. Ingalls, City
Manager of Hallandale, this morning and talked to him about
what they were doing. And he said that they are in trouble
the same as we are. They are intending to close their trash
dump, and they are dumping gart3age at Curcies now. He said
that he didn't know of any others7in the area. I had a call
from Johnny Sessa this afternoon and he said that we might make
a deal with Bob Butler to use the dump off of Taft Street. But
that is in the City of Hollywood, and I believe we will get in
trouble with. the City Officials of Hollywood if we use that dump
for trash.
Attorney Walden: If you are thinking about using the Curcie
area for both garbage and trash I would suggest that the City
- talk with Mr. Alemeida of the Health Department to make sure
that a week from now he won!t 'come .along and try to stop us
from going out there. You wouldn't want to find yourself in
the position of, say a month from now, the State Health Depart-
ment would say stopcusing Curcie Pit. If the Health Department
l
would give you a letter saying that they are willing to leave
you alone for from a year to two, years then it would be alright.
Then you could use the garbage dump on a part-time basis. No
0 one has contacted me on this , but based solely on this law suit
that the city was involved in two years ago with the Health De-
partment I think there is always going to be as much pressure
put on the City as possible to have the City use the County
Incinerator. So you should not abandon the dump out here on
Sterling Road entirely. You could use it part-time and take ..
the rest of it down to Curcies Dump. We will show on our record
that we are still using it (the Sterling Road dump) as a part-
time dump.

Commissioner Zenobia: I was talking to A. J. Ryan last night
after the meeting, and he said if we have any charter changes
in mind we had better start getting together and working them
out because they have to be having their hearings next month.
Attorney Walden: I have something to bring up. In the ordin-
ance that you adopted between the City and Marine Life we have
one typographical error, which his secretary apparently made,
and referred in one place as to "roads". We copied that from
the old ordinance. I would like to ask that we adopt a resolu-
tion to correct that one reference to roads.
A motion was made by Commissioner Zenobia that a resolution be
drawn and passed correcting the ordinance approving the lease
with Marine Life of Florida. The motion was seconded by Com-
missioner Young, and the roll being called, the Commissioners
voted <as follows:
Grammer Yes
Hill Yes
Young Yes
Zenobia Yes
Salvino Yes
