FLORIDA, HELD MARCH 21, 1958.
The City Commission of the City of Dania, Florida met in
Special Session in the Commission Room at the City Hall.
PRESENT WERE: MAYOR COMMISSIONER FRANK E. EBY
COMMISSIONERS E. B. ELKINS
ROBERT E. HOUSTON
JAMES J. MCMILLAN
E. S. TUBBS, JR.
' CITY ATTORNEY CLARKE WALDEN
CITY MANAGER LOUIS MALLEY
CITY CLERK MARY THORNHILL
Meeting called to order at 12:00 o'clock noon by Mayor Eby.
Mayor Eby stated that the purpose of the meeting was to award
the contract for the construction of an adult recreation build-
ing, dance floor and rest rooms, and asked for a recommendation
from the Architect, Victor A. Larson.
Mr. Larson stated that he had talked to B & C Construction
Company about using Dania sub-contractors. They stated they
would be glad to .use Dania contractors, but due to the fact that the Dania plumber that bid on the fob was $500 higher, and the
roofing contractor was $100 higher. That if he adhered to his
bid price he would have to use Hollywood contractors. The
lumber price was about the same in both cities. There is a
difference of $1,168 1n the low bidder and the next bid. Mr.
Childs had bids from all Dania sub-contractors. So far as the
job being difficult, it is not, it is up to the commissioners
what they want to do.
Commissioner McMillan stated that as far as he could find out
there was nothing wrong with the work done by B & C Construct-
ion Company, that they had done some work on the hospital and
it had been very satisfactory. That he thought it would be
well if they could give the local sub-contractors some con-
sideration.
Commissioner Houston stated that he felt we have nothing to
prove to us this man cannot do a good fob. The Architect has
checked him carefully, and he is qualified to do the Job. I
know it is a general practice when a contractor is awarded a
job they shop around for their sub-contractors. I would like
to see him contact Apex Roofing Company again and see what he
can work out with them. It may be they can get a competitive
from them. I would not like to go on record saying we will
only use Dania sub-contractors. •I see no reason why we could
not give this man the contract.
Mr. Larson stated that he had found that quite a few of the
General Contractors are not able to get sub-contractors in Dania.
Mr. Bibbo advised me that he contacted one electrical contractor
in Dania to give him a bid, and he ,xas told he could not give
him a figure as he did not do business with him. That he would
recommend the low bidder, B & C Construction Company, being
awarded the contract.
A motion was made by Commissioner Tubbs to accept the recom-
mendation of the Architect and award the contract for the con-
struction of an adult recreation building, dance floor and
restroom to the low bidder, B & C Construction Company, con-
tract being in the amount of $24060.00; motion seconded by

and also obtained prices from three firms for lights for the
ball field at the 30 Acre Park.
Commissioner Houston stated that he did not see any. way this
work could be contracted. That it was going to be a matter
of time and material. There is some of the old wire and fix-
tures that can be used again. There is also some underground
work recommended by Florida Power & Light. There is no work
that can be done by any of our employees. The field will be
ready in time for the ba eason, it is a question of getting
the lights ready. On thiriAeld we had 32 lights and there were
some complaints that there were not enough. The next step is
to 44 lights, it is a question of what you want to do.
