HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes of Organizational Meeting (2) MINUTES OF ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING DANIA BEACH CITY COMMISSION TUESDAY, MARCH 17, 2009 — 7:00 P.M. 1. Call to Order/Call to Order Mayor Jones called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. Present: Mayor: Albert Jones Vice-Mayor: Anne Castro Commissioners: Bob Anton Patricia Flury City Manager: Robert Baldwin City Attorney: Thomas Ansbro City Clerk: Louise Stilson Absent: Commissioner: John Bertino City Clerk Stilson noted that Commissioner Bertino would not be present at tonight's meeting because he is in Orlando due to the birth of his new granddaughter. She noted that Commissioner Bertino thanked everyone for their support throughout the years, and that he wished the new Commission well. Commissioner Anton motioned to excuse the absence of Commissioner Bertino; seconded by Vice-Mayor Castro. The motion carried unanimously. 2. Acceptance of Certification of General Election 2.1 Motion to accept certification of General Election results from the Broward County Canvassing Board City Clerk Stilson announced the results of the March 10, 2009 Municipal Election. The three Elected Officials are: Mayor: Anne Castro 1,508 votes Vice-Mayor: C.K. "Mac" McElyca 1,053 votes Commissioner: Walter Duke 962 votes Commissioner Anton motioned to accept the Certification of the General Election results from the Broward County Canvassing Board for the March 10, 2009 Municipal Election; seconded by Commissioner Flury. The motion carried on the following 4-0 Roll Call vote: Commissioner Anton Yes Vice-Mayor Castro Yes Commissioner Flury Yes Mayor Jones Yes 3. Administration of Oath of Office for Newly Elected Officials City Clerk Stilson administered the Oath of Office to the newly Elected Officials. 4. Seating of Elected Officials Commissioner Patricia Flury left the dais. Newly Elected Officials Commissioner Walter Duke and Vice-Mayor C.K. "Mac" McElyea took their seats at the dais. Vice-Mayor Anne Castro took her seat as the newly elected Mayor. Mayor Castro allowed the newly elected officials to make comments. Commissioner Duke thanked the voters for their support, as well as the civic and faith organizations who played an important role in this election. He also thanked his family and friends and his fiancee Lisa Young, for their tireless efforts to make his campaign a professional and successful one. Commissioner Duke noted that we need campaign reform in the City; we also need to review our Charter and look at campaign ethics. He thought we could find good use for the funds spent in the Primary Election. Commissioner Duke advised that he is seeking legal remedy for some of the things that occurred during the election. Lastly, he stated that he is looking forward to working hard for the residents of Dania Beach. Vice-Mayor McElyea thanked everyone who worked in the campaigns. He noted he is here to help make the City better. Vice-Mayor McElyea complimented Commissioner Flury and Mayor Castro for their professionalism and good work. Commissioner Jones noted this is a working Commission and we need to get busy with the work. Mayor Castro thanked everyone who worked during the elections. She recognized Commissioner Flury for all the work she did for the City, especially the parks. Mayor Castro introduced the new City Manager, Bob Baldwin. She noted the campaign is over, and when we meet in the Chamber we will be collegial and professional, and we are going to keep working hard to move the City forward. 5.
