4. Reports and Discussion
4.1 Turn Your Boat into a Float Parade-Kristen Jones, Parks & Recreational Director and
Colin Donnelly Assistant City Manager
Kristen Jones along with Colin Donnelly stated that the Turn Your Boat into a Float Parade an
idea in the beginning stages. It is being brought to the attention of the Marine Advisory Board for
assistance with the Dania Beach marine community to help promote homegrown boater pride.
This will be a land parade for trail-able boats through the city of Dania Beach, and will involve
community members that have decorated their boats. The parade will possibly take place during
the week prior to the Winter Fest Parade in Ft. Lauderdale. Assist City Manager Colin Donnelly
indicated we could possibly involve corporate sponsorship, and invited ideas from the Marine
Advisory Board. Mike Grady stated that the D.Q T. does not permit people to travel on roads
while in boats on trailers. Assistant City Manager Colin Donnelly stated that he would look into
getting a waiver for the parade. Vicky Payne of the Dania Beach Chamber of Commerce stated
that she is in full support of the idea. Chairman Taylor stated it is a first for the City of Dania
Beach, and thought that would be a great idea. The Marine Advisory Board voted unanimously
to endorse Turn your Boat into a Float Parade Committee.
4.2 Review of South Fork New River Navigational Hazards
Assistant City Manager Colin Donnelly stated to the board that he and Mike Grady went out
about three weeks ago during low tide to South Fork New River to see the navigational hazards.
Assistant City Manager Colin Donnelly said he spoke with John Fury of Broward County to
advise him that the Marine Advisory Board was applying for the BBIP Fund. He stated that John
Fury advised not to apply for the BBIP Fund. He said stated that Mr Fury would bring the idea
to the attention of Broward County to address the navigational hazard issues. Assistant City
Manager Colin Donnelly also stated that the City Commission is aware of the navigational
hazard issues and they are very supportive to having it repaired. Assistant City Manager Colin
Donnelly noted that he is also writing a letter of support to John Fury stating that the Marine
Board and the City Commission want the issue addressed, either through navigational channel
markers or getting rid of the rocks. Assistant City Manager Colin Donnelly indicated that John
Fury stated that if Broward County refuses to address the issue, he would support a grant
application funded for the City of Dania Beach to have contractors fix the permanent markers.
4.3 Sail boat storage north pier
Chairman Taylor stated that the City of Ft. Lauderdale and the City of Hollywood started a non-
motorized storage on the beach. He thought it would be a good idea for the City of Dania Beach
to incorporate this idea north of the pier. Assistant City Manager Colin Donnelly stated that the
City of Dania Beach only guards south of the pier and he believes that north of the pier is owned
by The City of Hollywood. He suggested that Dean Moss could provide the Marine Advisory
Board with more information regarding incorporating storage rental at the pier. Chairman Taylor
stated that he will check into who guards that part of the pier. Mike Grady stated that this may be
an issue as far as boaters and swimmers, in the same vicinity, due to liability reasons.
4.4 Marine Law Enforcement Report
Deputy Jason Riddle stated there is not much happening around the canals. He stated the derelict
vessels have been cleaned up, and the only incidents are cars in the canals which were all
recovered.
4.5 Marina Update
Captain Jay Jackson advised that The Public Works Department laid the temporary plywood on
the boardwalks and that the floating docks are next to have the temporary plywood applied. He
also stated that "Just Plants" donated flowers and plants to landscape around the marina. Captain
Jackson also stated that the City delivered mulch, but they are waiting until the irrigation system
