4. Reports and Discussion
4.1 Dania Beach Pending Florida Uniform Waterway Marker Application
Captain Jay Jackson spoke on behalf of Assistant City Manager Colin Donnelly on the Pending
Uniform Waterway Marker Application. He noted that Waterway Marker Application offered 2
choices: finalize the application and allow a require permit must be issued, or close the project
file out as inactive, and any signage and navigational aids currently installed to be removed
immediately. A statement to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Boating
and Waterways Section must also be provided within 30 days of the dated letter advising what
action the board intends to take. Captain Jackson advised members to cruise the main Dania Cut-
off Canal to view markers. If they are all unsatisfactory, they can have the old markers removed
and replaced with new markers, unless it is a major marker on the other side of the rocks.
Mike Grady stated he believe the current markers are posted signs for manatees and does not
help with navigating. Mike Grady also added that the current manatee signs have dates on them,
should state"slow"manatee due to manatees being in the canals year round.
Clive Taylor stated that the manatee signs are posted with dates for idle speed or safe speed
depending on the season. He also stated that he agrees with proceeding with the application to
get the permit.
Gary Rowe stated he would like to see signs posted for boats traveling down current to have the
right-of-way on the canal where only one boat can pass at a time when arriving at the Dania Cut-
Off Canal Bridge.
Captain Jay Jackson stated that the board should proceed with the application for the addition of
posted right-of-way signs posted. The board agreed to request to have an extension for the
response time and clarification of the application.
4.2 South Fork New River Navigational Hazards "Punk Rocks"
Chairman Clive Taylor noted that he attended the Broward County Marine Advisory Committee
(B.C.M.A.C.); he noted the Chairman of the board and the Liaison, John Flury took a boat and
airplane ride to view the canal. John Fury is cooperating to get the plans done by the Broward
County Engineering Department and Broward County will front all the cost.
