PLANNING AND ZONING BOARD ITEMS(ADVISORY)
1) VA-01-09 — Variance request by property owner Bradley Crow for a boat lift on property
located at 918 Nautilus Isle, Dania Beach, Florida. The variance request is to allow a boat
lift to extend 21 feet into a canal. (Dania Beach Zoning Appendix Sec. 33-40. "Regulation
and use of waterways and facilities related thereto' allows a maximum of 10 % of the canal
width which equals eight (8) feet for this property.)
Kristin Dion, City Planner addressed the board describing the proposed request for a boat lift.
She indicated that the property has an RS-6000 zoning designation and a land use designation
of Low (5) Residential. She further stated that the code allows a maximum length of any boat
lifting device to be 10% of the canal width. Ms. Dion stated that the canal is 80 feet wide at
this location which allows for a maximum length of 8 feet and that the applicant has an

existing boat lift in disrepair that needs to be upgraded. She stated that the existing lift
extends 10 feet into the canal past the existing 6 foot dock, for a total of 16 feet projecting
into the canal and that the applicant proposes to replace the existing 10 foot wide boat lift
with a 15 foot wide boat lift for a total of 21 feet extending into the canal. To allow for a
lesser impact, the applicant could remove the 6 foot dock in the area where the boat lift is
proposed and attach the lift to the seawall, for a total of 15 feet extending into the canal.
Ms. Dion concluded stating that staff is recommending to approval of the 15 foot wide boat
lift if it could be attached to the seawall. She further stated this request is associated with a
single family structure and that variances relating to marine structures, such as but not
limited to boat slips, docks and mooring structures require City Commission approval.
Chairman Fetscher called upon the applicant to comment. Ms. Dion indicated that the
applicant is not present.
Chairman Fetscher opened this item to the public for comment.
Anthony Deloia 761 NW 12"' Avenue, addresses the board indicating that he was opposed to
the request and felt the extended width is intrusive to the canal and feels approval of this
request would set a precedent and crowd the canal.
Jimmy Crimminger 237 SW 15`h Street, addressed the board indicating that the Marine
Advisory Board recommends that at least 20' of navigable waterway be maintained for safety
reasons.
Chairman Fetscher commented regarding the size of boats on the waterway.
Hearing no one and seeing no one, further the public hearing was closed.
After discussion by the board, a motion was made by Patrick Schilling to deny VA-01-09,
seconded by Lottye Crooms. Motion passed on the following roll call:
Edward Bourgeois — yes Lottye Crooms — yes
Patrick Schilling — yes Paul Fetscher — yes
