4. Reports and Discussion
4.1 Questions regarding Variances Kristin Dion Community Development, City of Dania Beach
Chairman Clive Taylor opened the floor for Guest Speaker Kristin Dion of the City of Dania
Beach Planning and Zoning Department. Ms. Dion questioned the board regarding the marine
docks variance request for boat lifts, which are permitted to extend 10 percent of the width of the
canal according to the city zoning codes. She has two applicants that want to extend their docks
20 percent. According to the codes a boat that is docked can only extend 30 percent of the width
of the canal. Ms.Dion noted that the Planning and Zoning Board members are asking why a boat
can be 30 percent the width of canal and also why do a boat lift that is submerged is required to

have guide polls visible.
Lewis Webb advised that if the person on the other side of the canal puts in a boat lift, there will
not be enough space for turning or moving because a boat lift is fixed and a boat is mobile.
Chairman Taylor questioned what does the code addresses as a far as a boat lift. Ms. Dion noted
according to the city codes, no extension of a boat lifting device capable of being submerged
shall extend more than 10 percent of the width of the waterway, unless a variance is granted.
Louis Webb stated that the fixed piles and the cradles are not the moving part and they are not a
submerged obstacle. Mr.Webb, along with Chairman Taylor stated that they need more
clarification to answer her questions. The board also advised Ms. Dion to have the area inspected
and to check with other cities such as Ft. Lauderdale, and other citiy's variances.
Chairman Taylor said he attended the B.M.A.0 (Broward County Marine Advisory Committee)
and noted the B.M.A.C. agreed to repair the navigational hazards known as the "Punk Rocks",
located around South Fork and the New River around 84. The B.M.A.C. is proceeding with
permitting and proper procedures to get the job done. He also noted that the B.M.A.C. is
completely funding this project.
4.2 Marina Update
Captain Jay Jackson noted that all is status quo at the marina; all the plywood has been installed
covering the dock wall. Captain Jackson also noted the power pedestals are installed and can
supply each vessel with a choice of thirty or fifty amps, and that the power pedestal has the
ability to provide another 50 amps if needed. Captain Jackson advised that telephones or
televisions are not in the plans at the marina. He noted that he is basically supplying power and
water only. Captain Jackson noted that the vacancies are slow and has now placed an ad offering
free Wi Fi in the Trade Magazine. He also noted that the city commission approved transient
vessels, which will be a big plus for the marina.
4.3 Law Enforcement Report
Captain Jay Jackson spoke on behalf of Jason Riddle. He noted that the Marine Law
Enforcement is trying to gain ownership of the vessels near the Dania Cut Off and St. Rd. 7, and
the vessel located at the 3400 block of Dania Cut-off Canal.
5. Old Business
Louis Webb questioned the status of the non-powered motorized vessel rental.
Chairman Taylor noted that he will have to speak with Jay Jackson or the lifeguards, and the
parking enforcement at the marina, on their opinion about the non-powered motorized vessel
rental. He noted that he is planning to meet with them.
