HomeMy WebLinkAbout2009-12-16 Marine Advisory Board Minutes MINUTES OF MEETING DANIA BEACH MARINE ADVISORY BOARD WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2009 - 6:00 P.M. 1. Call to Order Chairman Clive Taylor called the meeting to order at 6:05 p.m. 2. "Mad'McElyea, Vice-Mayor Jimmy Crimminger 3. Approval of minutes for November 19, 2009 meeting. Albert Owler motioned to approve the minutes, seconded by Mike Grady. The motion passed unanimously. 4.1 Reports and Discussion Clive Taylor, Chairman advised he is a member of the Broward County Marine Advisory Committee. He advised The City of Dania Beach Grants were reviewed and discussed. He also noted South Fork New River Navigation Markers Project ("Punk Rocks"), Derelict Vessel Removal Project and the Dania Beach Marina Project funds were all granted. He said that if they approve Phase I of the Dania Beach Marina Project, which is the engineering and design, then they will approve Phase II with the proper presentation. The construction of Phase II is estimated to cost around 2 million dollars. Chairman Taylor advised board members to attend the next City Commission Meeting to advise the Commission in a public form of how well the projects were presented and also they deserved it. He noted that he will advised The City Commission that more funds are available for public use. Mike Grady noted he attended the Marine Workshop along with the Mayor of Ft. Lauderdale, Jack Seiler and other speakers from the Marine Industry. He noted they discussed bringing the boating business back to Ft. Lauderdale, The Yachting Capital of the World. Mr Grady advised North Carolina is drawing competition in the mega yacht boating business to their state and would like to bring the yachting business back to Ft. Lauderdale. Mr. Grady also noted they discussed dredging of the Dania Cut-off Canal which is slated to begin summer 2010. He noted Commissioner Duke spoke on working together with Broward County as a team to get things done around the City and the County. Albert Owler noted regarding the yatching business being in North Carolina was due to the real estate industry was getting to be prohibitive to develop a property for use for marine industry it was going towards retail commercial or residential at that time. Mike Grady advised in able to draw people to South Florida we must a have a destination where people will want to go. He believes The City of Dania Beach has a lot of potential. 4.2 Law Enforcement Marine Report Deputy Jason Riddle noted that the derelict vessel located at Griffin Marine Park has been removed and they are working on the derelict vessel out west. He also noted funds granted from Broward County for the Derelict Vessel Project will be available around October 2010. 5. Old Business No discussion. 6.New Business Albert Owler expressed concern for lights or some sort of security at the Griffin Marine Park and questioned why the lights are not working in the park. Gary Rowe suggested the neighborhood crime watch should post signs. 7. Board Member Comments Chairman Clive along with Jimmy Crimminger discussed the restaurant at the marina. Chairman Clive Taylor noted the restaurant should be an open air restaurant which will be perfect for the marina and believes it will flourish. Chairman Clive Taylor suggested citizens should go to the City Commissions and complain. Jimmy Crimminger noted that legal action is in the works regarding the restaurant at the Marina.
