Byrd Commissioners : Jean Cook Howard Hirsch i Charles McElyea City Manager: Eugene Jewell The Workshop meeting to interview the applicants for the position of Police Chief was called to order by Mayor Bertino. i i The Commissioners, having reviewed the resumes of the five finalists, Charles Anderson, James DeCoursey, James Serpe, James Sewell and Gilbert Thievner, conducted interviews with j each candidate individually. During the interview with James Serpe, Commissioner Hirsch ¢ asked City Manager Jewell to report on the status of investi- gations for the record. City Manager Jewell stated that, based on latest information received, it appears that the 1 State Attorney' s Office would not be prosecuting any Dania Police Officers. i p Noting that this workshop was to be followed by a Special { Meeting to adopt a resolution to appoint a Police hief, the workshop meeting was then adjourned. City Attorney: Karl Adler City Manager: Eugene Jewell Deputy City Clerk: Marie Jabalee i (Deputy City Clerk , Marie Jabalee, was not present at roll call , but was present when the meeting was reconvened. ) Upon the advice of Counsel , the Special Meeting to fill the position of Police Chief was reconvened and called to order by Mayor Bertino. Assistant City Attorney Adler explained that the voting ecial meeting to arrive at the process used during the sp r selection of the Police Chief was improper. Each motion was then re-recorded and those Commissioners who abstained by g "present" to the roll call votes taken earlier were answering p i directed to cast "yes" or "no" votes per Florida Statute 286.012 . t The resolution to appoint a Police Chief was read by Asst . 4 City Attorney Adler. h A motion was made by Commissioner Hirsch, seconded by Commissioner Cook to adopt the Resolution appointing James Serpe as Police Chief at an annual compensation of $39 ,000 .
