WORKSHOP MEETING

1. Discussion regarding the position of City Manager.
Commissioner Stevens suggested advertising nationally for a
j professional city manager. However, since City Manager
Jewell 's resignation due to health reasons is to be
effective July 27th, Mayor McElyea felt that process would
take too long. It was generally agreed that it would save
time and money if they first checked out the list of city
j manager applicants who answered the advertisement published
nationally last time.
City Manager Jewell said he would have the Personnel
Director, Mike Smith, contact the top finalists selected by
the Commission last time, and, if still interested , obtain
new resumes. Mayor McElyea specifically asked that #17 on
the old list be looked up. City Manager Jewell said he and
Mr. Smith would have a report to the Commission as to the
old resumes at Tuesday night 's regular meeting.
2. Discussion regarding the position of Building Official .
Vice Mayor Cook suggested that a Growth Management
Department be created, that a Growth Management Director be
appointed, and that the building inspecting officials work
I under the direction of that department head.
Personnel Director Smith described the position of Growth
Management as encompassing the broad areas of land use,
environmental growth management, planning and zoning and
code enforcement as well as building. He pointed out that
the Chief Building Inspector position would still have to be
maintained.
City Manager Jewell noted several neighboring cities whose
Building Officials work under a Growth Management Director
and commented on the efficiency of that procedure due to the
fact that the Building Official is out of the office 50-75$
i of his time because he is a building inspector.

j The Commission agreed in general with the concept of Vice
Mayor Cook 's reorganization suggestion and discussed the
qualifications required and whether it should be a full-time
or part-time position. City Manager Jewell said he would
put a packet together on the Growth Management concept and
have it ready for the Commission next week.
This Workshop meeting was then adjourned.
