Discussion of proposed 1988-89 budget . { City Manager Jewell presented two proposed budgets, the initial budget proposing a tax increase of 47% and an alternative budget proposing a tax increase of 26% . He explained that the alternative budget contained figures reflecting savings in the Police Department budget that could only be estimated, not having received a written proposal yet from the Broward Sheriff' s Office . i The Commissioners chose not to discuss the initial proposed budget , feeling that a 47% tax increase was out of the question . Acknowledging that taxes have to be raised , the Commission generally agreed that the dollar amount of the alternative budget was more in line and asked City Manager Jewell to work from there and try to cut another 4 or 5 ,r, percent off that . At the Commission ' s request, City Manager Jewell agreed to stay on until the 15th of August when Mr . Flatley will assume the City Manager ' s position . During discussion , City Manager Jewell said he would continue to include Mr . Flatley in the budget preparation , get an alternative budget projection from Police Chief Thivener as suggested by Vice Mayor Cook, look into Commissioner Stevens ' recommendation regarding a Recreation Department Head , and would be meeting with the health insurance people on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 26th . City Manager Jewell was directed to schedule a budget workshop for Wednesday, July 27th at 9 : 00 a .m. and to present a workable budget proposal for Commission review at that time .
