Spofford Davie April 1,2004 The writer of the March 25 letter, "Airport homes buyout will cost,"makes a very good point regarding the real costs now associated with the planned south runway at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The mitigation program for homeowners that the County Commission endorsed is most generous. However, as the letter writer points out, this program--which greatly exceeds federal criteria and the interlocal agreement previously entered into by the county and Dania Beach--will carry an exorbitant cost. This,of course, will likely make the project prohibitively expensive, which may well have been the intent of one or more of those who proposed the package. How clever to be on record as supporting both the runway and associated economic growth while at the same time being able to assure homeowners that it will never happen. I trust that the letter writer understands that the result will be exactly what was experienced during the recent FedEx blown tires incident mentioned, which forced traffic onto the diagonal runway. As traffic increases and there is no relief in the form of an air carrier south runway, more and more traffic will be forced to utilize the diagonal runway. Perhaps those who packaged the mitigation program really didn't do the homeowners south of the airport and in Hollywood North Beach the favor many thought. Noise Impacts resulting from greater use of the diagonal runway will,of course, have to be addressed, but it would not appear that the innovative aspects of the interlocal or the recently defined mitigation package for the south runway construction program would apply in that case.
