HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-2013-036 Supported efforts of Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) to Restrict the Sale of Flavored Tobacco Products RESOLUTION NO. 2013-036 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA BEACH, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF STUDENTS WORKING AGAINST TOBACCO ("SWAT"), THE TOBACCO-FREE PARTNERSHIP OF BROWARD COUNTY AND THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY TO RESTRICT THE SALE OF FLAVORED TOBACCO PRODUCTS; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; FURTHER, PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, Students Working Against Tobacco ("SWAT") is a statewide youth organization, and the Tobacco-Free Partnership of Broward County, a community coalition committed to making Broward County a safer, healthier place to live, work and play, and the American Cancer Society support the passage of legislation restricting the sale of flavored tobacco products; and WHEREAS, the Harvard School of Public Health has found that tobacco companies specifically target youth with candy and alcohol flavored products to mask the harsh and toxic properties found in tobacco; and WHEREAS, in September 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (the FDA) was given the authority to regulate tobacco products and banned the distribution and sale of flavored cigarettes, which ban did not extend to other flavored tobacco products, such as cigars, cigarillos, and smokeless tobacco; and WHEREAS, despite age restrictions on the sale of tobacco products, there has been a 25 percent increase in cigar use among Broward County high school students since 2002; and WHEREAS, the City Commission supports the restriction of the distribution and sale of all flavored tobacco products; NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA BEACH,FLORIDA: Section 1. That the City Commission supports the efforts of Students Working Against Tobacco, the Tobacco-Free Partnership of Broward County, and the American Cancer Society to restrict the distribution and sale of flavored tobacco products. Section 2. That the City Clerk is directed to provide copies of this Resolution to the Broward League of Cities, the Broward County Board of Commissioners, and Broward County municipalities. Section 3. That all resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict with any provisions in this Resolution are repealed to the extent of such conflict. Section 4.
