HomeMy WebLinkAbout2013-02-19 Parks, Recreation & Community Affairs Board Minutes CITY OF DANIA BEACH PARKS, RECREATION & COMMUNITY AFFAIRS BOARD MINUTES OF MEETING TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 199 2013— 6:00 P.M. 1. Call to Order Jimmie Peterman called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. 2. Roll Call Members Present: Jimmie Peterman Lisa Drake Ivie Cure Judy Jensen Clare Frost Veronica Larkins Chris Barile Members Absent: Debra McElyea Tim Pelott Chip Brockman Guest Mark Felicetty, Director of Parks and Recreation 3. Approval of Minutes for January 15,2013 Meeting Lisa Drake made a motioned to amend January 15, minutes to reflect Veronica Larkins as being in attendance and also approval of the minutes. Judy Jensen seconded. All favored.None opposed. Motion passed unanimously. 4. Department Update and Discussion Mark advised that the Parks and Recreation Department will be having their "Spring Flea Market" at Frost Park on Saturday, March 02, and that there is vendor space available if anyone is interested. He also advised that on March 16'`, C.W. Thomas Park will have a "Bicycle Awareness" event along with the Broward Sheriffs Office. He noted that they will be having bicycle inspections, giving safety tips, along with bicycle competitions, light refreshments, and will giving out t-shirts to all participants. Clare questioned if the event was for children only. Mark stated that the event is open to all age groups. Mark noted that the "Spring Celebration" and "Easter Egg Hunt" will be on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Frost Park. The "Spring Celebration" will start at Ilam and the 1 "Easter Egg Hunt" will start at 12pm. He said that they have over 4,000 candy filled eggs to be given away with 8 gold eggs as special prizes. Clare questioned the senior days planned for the South West Community Center. Mark stated the he is pushing staff to plan more programs and more activities, especially for the South West Community Center. He said that they are in the early stages of planning a senior program on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings starting out with a small group of maybe 10 to 11 people with refreshments, bingo, cards, and occasional field trips. Mark advised that plans are in the early stages and is hoping to have a program in place by the summer. Jimmy questioned where do funds from events goes into that is collected by the Parks and Recreation Department Mark stated that all monies collected goes in to the City's General Fund. He also stated that all monies to purchase goods for sales comes out of the of the general fund and that all profits made from the sale of goods goes back into the general fund. Mark sent kudos to Clive Taylor and Clare Frost for the "Motorcycle Show", for a fantastic event and a jewel which brings more people to the City of Dana Beach than any other event. He thanked them both. 5. New Business Sharon Prentice, a member of the Southern Handcraft Society requested a fee reduction for the rental of I. T. Parker Community Center to have their Annual Holiday Craft Show to be held September 25- 28, 2013. Sharon advised that they send out about 2800 applications and last year they had 600 people to actually sign their books. However, she stated that sometimes one person will sign for a group of two to four people, so she estimated that with this event they bring in about 800 people into the City. Sharon also stated that this is their fourth or fifth year and that everyone loves it. Jimmy questioned the amount of the fee reduction. Sharon stated they paid$1200.00. Lisa questioned if the City have had any problems with the clean up. Mark advised that they this will be their fourth or fifth year and the City has never had an issue and when they leave the place are left immaculate. Chris questioned what would be the normal fee for the rental of L T. Parker Community Center. 2 M Mark responded that the rental of I. T. Parker Community Center is $100.00 per hour, but they will receive about a 75%reduction fee. Lisa Drake made motion to give the Southern Handcraft Society and reduction in rental fee for the rental of the I. T. Parker Community Center. Clare Frost seconded. All favored. Motion passed unanimously. Mark advised that they he had fee waiver request from the City of Dania Beach Chamber of Commerce to host her"Fishing Tournament".Unfortunately,the Executive Director could not attend the February 19, meeting. Mark noted that he will place her request on the March 19,2013 meeting. Clare stated that she found out last month that the Parks and Recreation allots $15,000 to the Senior Citizens Club and also that Debbie McElyea, Optimist Club is only allotted $5,000. She also said that she thinks that this kind of uneven and stated that the Optimist should received more than just$5,000 when the seniors are getting $15,000. Lisa stated that the Dania Bears and the Optimist Clubs runs only half a year and that the Senior Club is ran year round. She also stated that she thinks this was fair and that the seniors deserve the funds. 6. Old Business Veronica Larkins advised that the Dania Bears came in to request the 1. T. Parker Center for March 16, to have their banquet and that they will have to place it on the back burner for now. Mark advised that he spoke with Charles and that he gave Charles an option of available dates. 7. Adiournment Jimmy adjourned the meeting at 6:35 pm. Next meeting will be held 6 pm.,March 19,2013 at Frost Park. 3
