A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA
BEACH, FLORIDA, IN SUPPORT OF RENAMING A PORTION OF
INTERSTATE AIA/OCEAN DRIVE, LOCATED BETWEEN STATE ROAD
822/SHERIDAN STREET AND CAMBRIDGE STREET, LEADING UP TO
THE ENTRY OF JOHN U. LLOYD PARK IN BROWARD COUNTY, AS "DR.
VON MIZELL DRIVE"; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; FURTHER,
PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, Dr. Von Delaney Mizell was born on January 16, 1910, in Jasper, Florida,
and was the eldest of 14 children; he distinguished himself early in life, graduating as
valedictorian of his class at Florida Normal and Industrial Institute in St. Augustine, Florida; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mizell attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, and Meharry
Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee, and served as a second lieutenant in the United States
Army Reserve during World War 11; and
WHEREAS,Dr. Mizell established a medical and surgical practice as Broward County's
second African-American physician, and in 1938, he co-founded Provident Hospital, the first
hospital for African-Americans in Broward County, with Mrs. Leona Collins and Dr. James
Sistrunk; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mizell started the first NAACP chapter in South Florida in 1945, and
led the civic efforts to create the first beach for"blacks" (known for twenty-five (25) years as the
"Colored Beach"), now named"John U. Lloyd Beach State Park"; and
WHEREAS, during the 2014 Legislative Session, State Representative Joe Gibbons and
the Florida State Legislature passed SB 820 designating a portion of Interstate State Road
AlA/Ocean Drive, between State Road 822/Sheridan Street and Cambridge Street, leading up to
the entry of John U. Lloyd Park in Broward County, as "Dr. Von Mizell Drive"; and
WHEREAS, the City of Fort Lauderdale and Broward County recognized Dr. Mizell's
community activism and efforts by naming the Von D. Mizell Library on Sistrunk Boulevard in
Fort Lauderdale in his honor, and the Broward County Historical Commission worked to have
the State's Division of Historical Resources declare the "Colored Beach" a place of historical
significance under the State Historic Marker Program; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Von Delaney Mizell died on July 16, 1973, and his Great Floridian
plaque is located at the African American Research Library in Fort Lauderdale; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mizell through his dedication, commitment and tireless efforts,
contributed significantly to help persons of African-American and related descent to obtain
equality and equal access to medicine and to public facilities in Broward County;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF DANIA BEACH,FLORIDA:
Section 1. That the City Commission supports the designation of a portion of
Interstate State Road AIA/Ocean Drive, between State Road 822/Sheridan Street and Cambridge
Street, leading up to the entry of John U. Lloyd Park in Broward County, as "Dr. Von Mizell
Drive".
Section 2. That all resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict with this Resolution
are repealed to the extent of such conflict.
Section 3. That this Resolution shall become effective upon its passage and adoption.
PASSED and ADOPTED on November 18, 2014.
