A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA
BEACH, FLORIDA, SUPPORTING A NATIONAL EFFORT FOR THE
RESETTLEMENT OF REFUGEES, IRRESPECTIVE OF THEIR RELIGION,
RACE, NATIONALITY, OR COUNTRY OF ORIGIN AND URGING OTHER
FLORIDA COMMUNITIES TO SUPPORT A STRONGER NATIONAL
EFFORT TO RESETTLE THE MOST VULNERABLE REFUGEES;
PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; FURTHER, PROVIDING FOR AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Dania Beach, Florida, recognizes that
there are more refugees in the world today than at any other time since World War II, and more
than half of the world's refuges are children; and
WHEREAS, refuges are fleeing armed conflict and human rights abuses in Africa, the
Middle East, Southeast Asia, Central America and other regions; and
WHEREAS, more than half of the world's refuges are hosted by only ten countries and
many of these countries do not have adequate resources to keep refugees fed, housed and safe;
and
WHEREAS, there is a continued lack of funding for humanitarian aid in host countries
and food rations and medical aid are inadequate for many refugees; and
WHEREAS, refugees who need to be resettled include torture survivors, people with
severe medication conditions, LGBTI individuals, children traveling alone, and women and
children at risk; all of whom cannot return home and cannot stay in their host country due to their
extreme vulnerability; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has
determined that 1.2 million refugees are in need of immediate resettlement, but less than 150,000
resettlement places are available worldwide; and
WHEREAS, refugees in need of resettlement represent only a small percent of the
world's population; and
WHEREAS, in keeping with our national values and respect for human rights, the City
Commission encourages the United States to welcome refugees through a stronger national effort
to resettle the most vulnerable refugees;
NOW, THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF DANIA BEACH,FLORIDA:
Section 1. That the foregoing "WHEREAS" clauses are ratified and confirmed as
being true and correct and they are made a specific part of this Resolution.
Section 2. That the City Commission of the City of Dania Beach supports a national
effort for the resettlement of refugees, irrespective of their religion, race, nationality or country
of origin and urge other Florida communities to support a stronger national effort to resettle the
most vulnerable refugees.
Section 3. That all resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict with this Resolution
are repealed to the extent of such conflict.
Section 4. This Resolution shall become effective immediately upon its passage and
adoption.
